One waterway makes a striking mark on Hérault: the Canal du Midi is a navigable, 360-kilometre waterway listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with 328 structures. Its 240-kilometre main section reaches the Étang de Thau at Marseillan. Near Agde, a further 0.5-kilometre stretch connects the River Hérault with the town’s round lock. The long main route and this short link illustrate two different scales of this feat of water engineering.

Waterways and outdoor activities

Water and outdoor activities also shape the ways to explore beyond the canal. The Étang de Thau is a saltwater lagoon connected to the Mediterranean via Sète and Marseillan. It covers 7,500 hectares and is home to more than 400 recorded aquatic species. Swimming is possible there; check local conditions before your visit. The coast is 87 kilometres long; this official planning figure may be revised in future editions. The waters are used for water sports.

Outdoor sports supported by the PDESI and practised freely include hiking, climbing, canoeing and kayaking, paragliding, cycling and sailing. For Hérault, 3,200 kilometres of hiking trails and 3,580 kilometres of mountain-bike routes are given as planning figures; future editions may update these numbers. The Larzac–Méditerranée route crosses Hérault for 250 kilometres between Millau and Cap d’Agde. Check route conditions and services before setting off.

At the Pont du Diable, nature and cultural history come together. Swimming, canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding are possible there seasonally; check local conditions for water access and activities before your visit. The bridge is described as having been built in 873 and is considered one of the oldest medieval bridges in France. It is listed as a Monument historique, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List and lies within the Gorges de l’Hérault Grand Site de France.

History and heritage

Another historical trail leads to Gellone Abbey. Founded in 804, it developed into an important spiritual and cultural centre of Languedoc. Since 1998, it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage List of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France. Together with the history of the Pont du Diable and the structures along the Canal du Midi, it offers a multifaceted picture of the region’s heritage: religious history, medieval bridges and a navigable waterway represent different chapters.

Regional produce and food

Culinary traditions also tell the story of the landscape and agriculture. Pélardon AOP is produced in the mountain areas and Mediterranean garrigue sectors of Hérault. Its flavour is shaped by the plants that goats eat on their pastures for more than half the year. Goat grazing helps preserve typical garrigue and Cévenol maquis landscapes and keep the vegetation open. Here, a product is linked to the landscape where the animals graze.

Parts of Hérault also lie within the area where milk for Roquefort is produced and processed. The cheese is made from raw whole milk from Lacaune sheep and aged for at least 90 days. In Bouzigues, local cuisine is directly tied to the lagoon: the town is designated a “site remarquable du goût”, and businesses along the lagoon offer oysters and mussels. The market in Bouzigues showcases produce from the Thau archipelago; check market days before your visit.

Culinary tourism in Hérault also includes markets, vineyards, shellfish farms and producers’ farms. Wine tourism invites visitors to meet winemakers and discover places to taste and buy wine. Regional discoveries thus range from the history of a cheese and pastoral farming to produce from around the lagoon.
