Saint-Chinian lies between fragrant garrigue and renowned vineyards. The Moulin du Rocher is a grain mill dating from 1854, perched on the “du Rocher” cliff above the town. It overlooks the Saint-Chinian vineyards and the Vernazobre Valley. Its year of construction, type of mill and location give the site a tangible connection to its history and landscape.
Wine and Encounters
The Maison des Vins de Saint-Chinian offers wine tourism activities and events throughout the year, as well as opportunities to meet wine producers from the Saint-Chinian appellation. It also provides advice and the chance to taste several wines from a selection. The offerings range from events and conversations with producers to tastings. Before your trip, check specific dates, booking options and current tasting availability.
Pilgrimage Site and Walking Destinations
The Chapelle Notre-Dame de Nazareth is a pilgrimage site on the “la Corne” hill, overlooking Saint-Chinian and the Vernazobre Valley. A 9 km walking trail from Saint-Chinian leads to the chapel. The “Parfum de Garrigue” walk starts at the Moulin du Rocher and leads to the capitelles. The two walks differ in their named starting points and destinations: one leads to the chapel, the other to the capitelles. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
A longer circular route is the “Tour en Saint-Chinian – GR® de Pays Minervois, Saint-Chinian, Faugères”: it is 48 km long and starts in Saint-Chinian. Along the way, it passes through wine-growing areas and welcoming villages and connects smaller heritage sites. This circular route therefore has a different focus from the walks that each lead to a named destination. Check route conditions before setting off.
Walking and Climbing
For climbing, there is the Falaise d’Escalade de Notre Dame in Saint-Chinian. The crag has 15 west-facing routes graded from 5c to 7a+. The routes have been fully re-equipped since 2008. As the number of routes and their grades may change when equipment is updated, check the current topo before climbing.
Cloister, Art and Organ
The restored “Le Cloître de Saint-Chinian” cloister has a garden with olive trees and a fountain. Concerts and exhibitions are held there regularly in summer. If you plan to attend these events, check the seasonal dates in advance.
“L’Art en Cave” is a contemporary art gallery in the heart of the Saint-Chinian cooperative winery. The individual artworks change over time. This gives the gallery a different cultural focus from the cloister, which hosts a regular summer programme.
The Notre-Dame-de-la-Barthe church houses another historical and artistic feature: its organ, dating from the late 18th century. Attributed to J. B. Micot, it has 1,919 pipes, 100 of them on the façade, and was classified as a “Monument Historique” in 1976.
