Lamalou-les-Bains is located in the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut-Languedoc. Thermal history, cultural heritage and trails through the Forêt de l’Usclade reveal different sides of the town. When planning a stay, you can therefore choose to focus on the thermal centre, historic buildings and events, or walks and hikes.

Thermal History and Cultural Heritage

The first thermal establishment in Lamalou-les-Bains was inaugurated in 1709. Today, the town is one of the few French thermal centres that treats neurological and rheumatological conditions at the same time. This gives the thermal theme particular importance when choosing where to stay. If your visit depends on specific treatment details, check the latest information before travelling, as these details may change.

The town’s architectural history also spans more than one period. Notre-Dame de l’Assomption in Villecelle was rebuilt in the 17th century on Romanesque remains and restored after extensive works. Lamalou-les-Bains also has villas from the Belle Époque. In the Parc et forêt de l’Usclade, century-old cedars stand beside a Belle Époque music pavilion; the Parc de l’Usclade also contains remains of the former Vaporarium. Architecture and the history of the thermal baths thus meet in the town and the park.

The Théâtre de Lamalou is a 600-seat Italian-style theatre that has retained its 1900 appearance. The local operetta tradition is a fitting complement: the Festival lyrique de Lamalou-Les-Bains offers operetta performances every summer. Check the programme if a performance is a deciding factor in your travel plans. Free guided tours take place once or twice a month at the Prieuré Saint-Pierre de Rhèdes; you should also confirm their dates before visiting.

Forest Trails and Routes Compared

The Forêt de l’Usclade offers both shady walks and longer hikes along forest trails. One notable route crosses the forest: the GR7, “Traversée du Massif Central par les Parcs,” continues as far as the village of Croix des Baussels. The Espace Trail Montagnes du Caroux – Parcours 7 – La Croix des Baussels is also described as a circular route starting and ending in Lamalou-les-Bains. It is 9.5 kilometres long and rated easy.

For a shorter hike, the Lamalou-les-Bains–Le Poujol-sur-Orb section of the Passa Païs can be planned as an out-and-back route: it is 1.5 kilometres one way, 3 kilometres in total, with a gentle gradient of under 2 per cent. The Passa Païs is a former railway line converted for cycling that passes through Lamalou-les-Bains. The two hiking options described therefore differ clearly in length and format: a short section with a return journey, or an easy 9.5-kilometre circular route.

Another hiking destination is Notre-Dame-de-Capimont. The hike leads to the access path to the sanctuary. Together with the trails in the Forêt de l’Usclade, it offers a different perspective on a stay from the theatre, architecture and thermal history.

Markets and Getting Around Locally

A traditional market is held in Lamalou-les-Bains every Tuesday throughout the year. The Navette Lamalousienne is also useful for getting around: it is available to people over 65 and people with reduced mobility for journeys within the municipality. With advance booking, it also makes some trips to Bédarieux station. As timetables and fares may change, check them before travelling; journeys to the station require a reservation.

If you’re looking for a hotel in Lamalou-les-Bains, first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: thermal experiences, cultural heritage and events, or forest trails all lead to different travel plans. The route details help you distinguish short walks from longer hikes; guided tours and summer performances have their own schedules. This makes it easier to choose where to stay based on the experiences that matter to your trip.
