The Agout flows through Fraisse-sur-Agout, giving the village a strong connection to the water. When planning your visit, it is worth considering the different options: the Sentier Prévert, a forest loop around Lac de Vésoles, a waterfall and fishing spots, including a course right in the village. This lets you decide whether to spend your time walking and observing nature, visiting a particular attraction or fishing. The options range from a 600-metre fishing course to a 6.5-kilometre loop, offering a variety of experiences.
Forest Trail, Moorland and Waterfall
Lac de Vésoles is the highest-altitude lake in the Hérault département. A 6.5-kilometre forest trail loops around the lake and can be explored on foot or by mountain bike. This circular route differs from the path from the lake to the Saut de Vésoles waterfall. You can climb up to the waterfall via the Sentier des 1000 marches. A protected moorland area by the lake is home to remarkable flora. The lake, moorland and different trail routes offer several specific ways to plan a nature outing.
The Sentier Prévert and Picarel
The Sentier Prévert is an interpretive trail about trees and the natural environment, with information panels along the way. It starts in the village centre, opposite the Bureau d’Information Touristique, and leads you to discover the Picarel menhir statue. Nature and a named cultural landmark come together on this trail. The central starting point also makes it easy to find where to begin your walk, without requiring a particular duration or trail length.
Fishing Courses on the Agout
Les berges fleuries runs for 600 metres through the village. You can fish for rainbow trout there; equipment and bait are provided. Details of this offer may change seasonally, so it is best to check them before making plans. Upstream from the traditional fishing course is Les berges sauvages: a one-kilometre fly-fishing course in a deliberately unspoilt setting. Its opening times are seasonal; check the current conditions in advance. The two courses differ in length, fishing style and surroundings, giving you a choice between traditional fishing in the village and fly-fishing upstream.
Picnics and Seasonal Attractions
The Île sur l’Agout picnic area is a shady spot by the river, suitable for fishing and equipped with a barbecue. The Île sur l’Agout and its water wheels are open to visitors from June to October. Check these dates again before your trip if you plan to visit. The Circuit fleuri is another attraction for visitors to Fraisse-sur-Agout.
Local History and More to Discover
The Croix Saint-Jean is regarded as the birthplace of Fraisse-sur-Agout and stands on the site of the first church. Its links to the origins of the village and the site of its first church make it a clear point of reference for local history. Another place of interest is the paillé de Prat Alaric. If you would like to include history and named landmarks as well as nature trails, you can add these places as separate points of interest to your travel plans.
