Jacou combines walking trails through Mediterranean vegetation with an old town centre and a varied cultural programme. There are routes with different themes to choose from for exploring on foot: the “Parcours Bleu” leads through a pine forest, the La Mayre trail follows a stream, and historic sites can be found in the old centre. There are also the gardens of Bocaud and events at La Passerelle.

Walking Trails and Nature in Jacou

The 2 km “Parcours Bleu” by “Chemins de traverse” starts outside École élémentaire Condorcet and ends outside the Jacou media library and town hall. Along the way, the route passes through a pine forest and follows the La Ribeyrolle stream to the entrance of Parc Bocaud. The start and end points make it easy to plan your walk, and its length is given as 2 km.

Opened in 2019, the La Mayre trail runs from the entrance to Jacou, at the junction of Avenue de Vendargues and Rue Antoine Blanchemain, to the La Draye district. It follows a stream; along the way, you can discover a wildflower meadow and a fig tree conservatory. The trail is accessible to everyone, including people with reduced mobility. Check the local accessibility conditions before your visit.

The wooded area of Las Bouzigues offers a pleasant walk among a variety of Mediterranean plant species. By contrast, the red loop of “Chemins de traverse” focuses on sport and shares anecdotes about the history and sporting life of the commune. The trails therefore have different themes: plants and woodland on the one hand, and sport and local history on the other.

Historic Gardens and Sites in the Town Centre

A cultural and historical walk through the old centre takes you to the spring and its ornate grotto, the former parish church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens, the washhouse, the water reservoir and the Maison de la Coquille. Dates for guided walks vary by season. If you would like to join a guided walk, check the dates for your travel period.

The garden at Parc et jardin de Bocaud dates from the 18th century and has been listed as a Monument historique since 2000. Near the lake, the garden features a grotto-nymphaeum decorated with rockwork and shells. The Domaine de Bocaud is listed as historic heritage, while Parc de Bocaud is classified as historic heritage. Visitors can stroll through the terraced gardens of Château de Bocaud; the interior is not open to visitors.

Cultural Programme and Travel Planning

La Passerelle’s public programme includes music, circus, theatre and film events, as well as contemporary dance performances and workshops. As part of the “Soirées occitanes de Jacou,” La Passerelle welcomes the Chœur Occitan de Clapiers Universellement T’apprécié each year for a concert of Occitan songs. Every spring, nearly 600 young people from Jacou perform at La Passerelle as part of “Jacou a du Chœur.” These events offer different reasons to visit, from contemporary dance to concerts and performances by young people.

Jacou can be reached from Montpellier by tram line 2 in about 20 minutes. This travel time is approximate; journey times and route details may change. Check the connection for your travel date, especially if you plan to combine it with a walk or an event.
