Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert lies above the Hérault Gorges. When planning your trip, you can choose from striking scenery, religious heritage, village history and activities on the river. Gellone Abbey, the Abbey Museum and the Village d’Antan Museum offer cultural highlights, while walks and river excursions add nature and activities to the mix. When choosing your accommodation, consider which theme you want to shape your stay: history and collections, a walking trail with distinctive features, or time by the water.

Scenery and River Excursions

The Hérault Gorges are home to a diverse range of wildlife and plant life. Family-friendly river excursions are offered at the Base nautique de Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, where canoes, kayaks, paddle boats and other watercraft are available. This makes the river a distinct focus for activities as well as part of the scenery. Operating conditions and available equipment may change; check both before your excursion.

Abbey and Village History

The former Gellone Abbey was founded in 804 by Guilhem, Duke of Aquitaine. It houses relics of Saint Guilhem and a fragment of the Cross of Christ. The abbey is also a pilgrimage stop on the routes to Santiago de Compostela. If you want to include religious heritage in your travel plans, you will find here both the story of the abbey’s founding and a connection to the pilgrimage routes.

The Abbey Museum is located in the monks’ former refectory and is free to enter. Check seasonal access information before your visit.

The Village d’Antan Museum showcases life in the village in earlier times and the trades once practiced there. Life-size santons are on display in a 12th-century house. The museum also presents historic household furniture, everyday objects, porcelain, sculptures and copper objects. Its subjects range from village life and trades to a variety of household and collection items.

Walking as a Distinct Focus

The walk to Les Fenestrettes follows an exposed trail along a hillside, once built by monks. The route offers exceptional viewpoints. Its historic construction, hillside setting and views give it a distinctive character. The Notre-Dame-du-Lieu-Plaisant loop is another walking route in Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert. You can therefore choose between a route with specific named landscape and historic features and another named walking option.
