At the Pointe des Onglous, the Canal du Midi comes to an end: here, its waters meet the Étang de Thau lagoon. This meeting point brings together two defining aspects of Marseillan—cultural heritage by the water and a landscape shaped by nature, fishing and water sports. When planning your visit, it’s worth distinguishing between a walk around town, a reserved nature tour and activities on the lagoon: each offers a different perspective on the area.

Between the Canal du Midi, the lagoon and Bagnas

The Pointe des Onglous marks the end of the Canal du Midi and the spot where its waters meet the Étang de Thau lagoon. Sailing, kayaking and fishing take place on the lagoon. If you’d like to discover Marseillan from the water, you could also consider a guided boat trip on the Étoile de Thau IV. It departs from Quai Antonin Gros in the port of Marseillan-Ville. As this is a current visitor offering, check the trip details for your chosen date.

Bagnas offers a different kind of nature experience: this protected coastal wetland lies between Cap d’Agde and Marseillan-Plage. Its landscapes include lagoons, sansouires and salt marshes. There is a free observation point on the D 51 between Marseillan-Plage and Marseillan-Village. Visits to the nature reserve are separate: these are guided tours offered by reservation as part of nature events. Check the event dates in advance if you’re planning to join a tour.

Cultural heritage on foot and on stage

The Ligne Bleue is an urban cultural walk that explores Marseillan’s heritage. In the town centre, the route connects 14 notable heritage sites. This lets you plan a walk around the town’s landmarks rather than focusing your visit on a single attraction.

The Théâtre Henri Maurin is another part of Marseillan’s cultural identity: it is one of the last Italian-style theatres in the Hérault department. Its monthly programme includes a free performance for young audiences and two performances for the general public. As the programme may change, it’s a good idea to check the performance dates before your visit. The annual Fête de la Saint-Pierre honours women and men who devoted their lives to the sea. If the festival fits your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant year.

Vermouth, wine and the lagoon as a livelihood

At La Maison Noilly Prat, a guided tour takes you through the vermouth-making facility, which has been in operation for two centuries. The tour includes access to the brand museum and a tasting of the vermouth collection. The Explorer tour has a different focus: it includes access to the cooperage and tastings of aged wines and mistelles. La Maison Noilly Prat also offers a Spritz workshop with a guided tasting, professional instruction and the chance to make your own Spritz. Workshop availability and tour booking details may change; check them before your visit.

The Étang de Thau lagoon also shapes local livelihoods centred on fish and shellfish. Fishing and shellfish farming are traditional activities there; nearly 200 oyster farmers from Marseillan preserve this inherited know-how. For a glimpse of another side of wine culture, the Cave de la Plage run by Caves Richemer offers platters to share on its terrace, to enjoy with a glass of Richemer wine. Caves Richemer is a coastal wine cooperative specialising in white and rosé wines. By honouring people who devoted their lives to the sea, the Fête de la Saint-Pierre also celebrates this maritime character.

Cycle between the different parts of town

The Voie verte du Lido is one option for getting between the different parts of Marseillan. It joins the cycle route from Marseillan-Plage; from there, you can continue towards the Pointe des Onglous and Marseillan-Ville. Route information may change, so it’s a good idea to check it before setting off. Along with the cultural walk, lagoon activities and offerings related to vermouth and wine, it gives you a range of options for your stay—you don’t have to fit them all into one day.
