The Notre-Dame de la Providence Chapel places Maraussan’s local history on a concrete timeline: it dates back to 1685, was inaugurated in 1688, extensively renovated in 1988 and restored in 2014. It is also a stopping point for many hikers. The area around this building opens up further topics: the development of Saint Symphorien Church, the history of winemaking and routes through the countryside.

The Chapel, the Church and the Old Village

Between the 9th and 11th centuries, a feudal castle surrounded by fortifications stood on the site of Saint Symphorien Church. The church developed from the former castle chapel through successive extensions. Looking at both religious buildings, therefore, reveals different historical stories: at Notre-Dame, its origins, inauguration and restorations can be traced through dates; Saint Symphorien links a medieval castle site with the later development of a church.

The old village can also be explored along cobbled lanes and past a washhouse. Behind the choir of Saint Symphorien Church, a garden was created on the former cemetery and overlooks the Orb plain. A small wooded park by the church in Maraussan offers open views of Béziers and the Orb plain.

Wine History and Visits

The Vignerons Libres cooperative winery in Maraussan was founded in 1901 as France’s first winegrowers’ cooperative. The Vignerons Libres winemaking cellar was built in Maraussan in 1905. The “La ronde des caves” route also has a specific starting point: it begins at the historic cooperative winery, in front of the Vignerons Libres gable. Its founding, construction date and the route’s starting point are distinct landmarks in Maraussan’s wine history.

Château de Perdiguier is a 14th-century feudal castle in Maraussan. A guided tour includes two rooms and the courtyard of honour; for 2026, it is listed as running from January 1 to December 31. Confirm the visiting arrangements before your trip. The Château offers tastings and sales of the estate’s red, white and rosé wines, as well as Perdiguier honey. Product availability may change; check before your visit.

Routes and Countryside

The wine trail lets visitors discover Maraussan’s Mediterranean flora and vineyards. The former railway line through Maraussan is now part of the Voie Verte. The wine trail focuses on plant life and vineyards, while the Voie Verte points to the route’s former use.

The area’s geological history also broadens the timeframe: Maraussan was built on one of the terraces formed during the Quaternary glaciations. This geological period long predates the castle site from the 9th to 11th centuries, adding a much older perspective to the visible architectural and wine histories.
