Garrigue and vineyards shape the landscape of Sussargues. They are joined by an early ecclesiastical heritage and traces of quarrying that can be explored along various trails. If you are planning a stay, you can focus on the local history or the former quarries. The specific sites and trail features can help you decide how to spend your time in Sussargues.

Garrigue, vineyards and ecclesiastical heritage

The first building of Église Saint-Martin was constructed between 919 and 925. Its forecourt features a mission cross, light-colored stone, rose bushes and a small parish garden. Together, the church and its forecourt offer a tangible impression of the site's design alongside its early architectural history. The Croix de Reboul adds a distinctive feature: it is one of the oldest mission crosses in Sussargues and stands on a hill. Those interested in ecclesiastical heritage will find several points of interest here—from the dating of the first church building to the history of the mission crosses.

Quarry history along two trails

The Sentier des quatre carrières leads to former quarries and offers insight into the work of the quarrymen, known as “calus.” Traces of carts embedded in the rock are among the features described, as are unusual sculptures at Font d’Armand. The trail also passes through Valentibus on its way to the entrance to Sussargues. These stops make the route especially interesting for travelers who want to learn about the former use of the quarries and the traces left by the work carried out there.

The Boucle de Reganhat takes a different approach. This short circular walk passes a stone dry-stone hut built by a quarryman, former quarries, information boards and old tools. It offers a glimpse into the hard work of the “calus.” Capitelles can also occasionally be found in the quarries: small dry-stone huts that quarrymen used for shelter or to store their tools. Both trail descriptions explore the area's quarry heritage, but each has a different focus—the Sentier des quatre carrières mentions, among other things, traces in the rock and the sculptures at Font d’Armand, while the Boucle de Reganhat also includes a hut, information boards and tools.

Plan your journey and dining

Bus route 27 serves Sussargues on the route between Castelnau-le-Lez, at the Notre-Dame de Sablassou stop, and Sussargues. You can reach Baillargues train station from Sussargues by minibus, but only with a reservation made in advance and during specific time slots. As these are different services with different destinations, check the route 27 timetable, as well as the minibus reservation requirements and time slots, for your travel date.

Le Chai d’Émilien opens its guinguette seasonally and by reservation. Check the dates and make a reservation before your trip if you would like to plan a visit. The town's different features can also help you plan an overnight stay: its church and cross history contrasts with the story of the former quarries and their workers. This can help you decide which side of Sussargues you would like to experience during your stay.
