There are several themes to explore on a trip to Ceyras: church and architectural history, cultural offerings, a wine experience, and tubing on the river. The historic traces range from a church with early documented references to an aqueduct dating from the early modern period. You can focus your stay on architectural history or on one of the activities described.
Landscape and the banks of the Lergue
The municipality of Ceyras extends for seven kilometres along the left bank of the Lergue. The river is a prominent geographical feature of the municipality; the historic buildings and cultural offerings provide further perspectives on the area.
Churches and chapels from different building periods
The Church of Saint-Saturnin is documented from 804 and is mentioned eight times in total up to 1153. In the 15th century, a Gothic nave was added at right angles to it. Its southern end opens onto a monumental porch facing the road. The early references and later extension mark different stages in its architectural history.
The main structure and porch of the Chapel of Notre-Dame-d’Hortus can also be dated to different periods. Its main construction phase was at the end of the 14th or beginning of the 15th century; the large porch was built towards the end of the 15th century. The chapel stands at the entrance to the municipality and is clearly visible from the road. Its location provides a clear landmark, while the different dates offer a distinct perspective on its history.
The Chapel of Saint-Pierre-de-Leneyrac was probably built around the year 1000 and later served as a subsidiary or branch chapel of the church in Ceyras. Together with Saint-Saturnin and Notre-Dame-d’Hortus, it shows that the area’s church history spans several buildings and periods.
Water engineering and defensive history
The Aqueduc de Rieu was built at the end of the 16th or beginning of the 17th century. It carried water from the spring at Horts du Pioch to a large garden known as «Le Grand Jardin» in the 18th century. The aqueduct’s construction date and the garden’s later name belong to different stages of this history: the structure was used to convey water, while «Le Grand Jardin» was the garden’s later name.
The Tour du Guet de Leneyrac served a different purpose: the tower was used for surveillance and defence and formed part of the defensive system of the Château des Guilhem. The aqueduct and the tower therefore represent different practical functions in the past—water supply on the one hand, and defence on the other.
Cultural offerings and activities
The Médiathèque La Cave à Livres offers weekly events for children and adults. It also has a permanent photo exhibition by the Objectif Image 34 club, which is updated regularly. Check the current events programme and exhibition display before your visit.
At Domaine de l'Abreuvoir, an experience combines a walk through the vineyards with a tasting in the wine cellar, accompanied by local tartines and terroir products. Tubing on the river involves using an individual inflatable ring. The activities therefore have different focuses: one combines vineyards and a tasting, while the other is a water activity. Check the current format of the Domaine experience before booking and the seasonal availability of tubing before your trip.
