The network of hiking trails marked by the municipality of Rosis lies entirely within the Parc naturel régional du Haut Languedoc. The trails, mountain scenery and heritage offer different ways to shape a trip here. The hamlet of Douch is a starting point for hikes in the Massifs du Caroux and de l’Espinouse; the routes vary considerably in length, duration and difficulty.

Hiking from Douch and in the Vialais area

Douch is a mountain hamlet at an altitude of 900 metres and a starting point for hiking trails in the Massif du Caroux and the neighbouring Massif de l’Espinouse. When choosing a route, you can therefore start by considering its length and difficulty: the circular hike to the summit of Caroux is 8 kilometres long, takes about 3 hours and is of moderate difficulty. The summit stands at 1,091 metres and is the highest point of the Caroux plateau. The route passes through peat bogs, where information panels are installed.

A longer and more challenging option is the circular hike through the Vialais area: it is 15 kilometres long, takes about 5 hours and is considered difficult. The Vialais route runs from the hamlet of Héric to the heights of Montagne d’Aret. It is marked with yellow PR waymarks and designated PR-FFR. This gives you a choice between a moderate hike of about three hours and a five-hour circular route rated as difficult.

The trail between Caroux and Espinouse starts in Douch, is 25.1 kilometres long and is described as wild and challenging. A notice dated 9 March 2026 reported that it was closed until further notice following recent storms. Check its current status before using the trail; no loop is specified for this route.

Protected areas and nature

The Caroux-Espinouse National Hunting and Wildlife Reserve covers a large part of the Vialais Valley. A public hiking trail crosses the heart of the reserve along the valley. Access may be subject to seasonal restrictions; before setting out, also check the local boundaries of the protected area.

The trails connect landscapes with different features, and not every route has the same character: at the Caroux summit, the path passes peat bogs and information panels, while the Vialais route runs from the hamlet of Héric to the heights of Montagne d’Aret. The municipality also lists the Sentier d’interprétation des gorges d’Héric as a downloadable visitor resource on its hiking page. Rosis is considered a popular destination for climbing enthusiasts.

In Douch, the Maison du Mouflon et du Caroux provides additional information about the region. The information centre is aimed at visitors interested in nature, hiking and heritage. Its exhibitions and documentation cover mouflons, fauna and flora, hiking trails and the Natura 2000 programme.

Church and watermill

The cultural sites offer their own points of interest. The Church of Sainte-Marie de Douch stands outside the hamlet in a protected area. Its first recorded mention dates from 966. The shaft of its bell tower is probably the only authentically medieval part of the church. These details place the church in its historical context without making any claims about current visiting arrangements.

The Moulin de Lafage is situated on the banks of the Ruisseau d’Arles, upstream of the Gorges de Colombières. Following its restoration, information panels were installed inside and the building was opened to the public. The functional watermill is one of the few mills of its kind in the Parc naturel régional du Haut Languedoc to be in this condition. There are around 400 watermills in the park, in very different states of preservation.

When planning your trip, you can choose how much to focus on hiking, nature and heritage: the shorter summit loop has different time and difficulty requirements from the longer Vialais loop; Douch also provides a starting point for trails in both of the aforementioned mountain ranges. If you are looking for accommodation in Rosis, you can use your choice of hikes to guide the length and focus of your stay. Bear in mind the possible seasonal restrictions, and check the status of the trail between Caroux and Espinouse before using it.
