At the end of the promenade, near the l’Angle cove, walkers can see the Gouffre de la Vise: a sinkhole 100 metres in diameter and 30 metres deep. It is also a spring with nearly fresh water, whose temperature remains constant at 21 °C. The site thus combines a striking natural landmark with a strong connection to thermal water—two aspects that shape Balaruc-Les-Bains.
Thermal Baths and Thermal History
Les Thermes de Balaruc-les-Bains is a 16,000-square-metre facility devoted entirely to wellbeing and relaxation. Its treatment facilities include five shared pools for rheumatology and phlebology, as well as seven hydrotherapy areas in individual cabins. If you are visiting for a particular service, check the latest details in advance, as the facilities may change.
The town’s history is also linked to thermal bathing: the Pavillon Sévigné was built in 1753 and was Balaruc-les-Bains’ first thermal facility. It provides a historical connection to the town’s present-day thermal theme, while the current facility has its own treatment areas.
Waterfront Paths, the Spring and the Lagoon
The almost two-kilometre-long Georges Brassens–Laurent Spinosi promenade runs along the shores of the Thau Lagoon and is fully accessible. It has held the Tourisme-&-Handicap label since summer 2023. The also-accessible Brassens-Spinozi promenade offers views of Mont Saint-Clair and the oyster farms. The route can stand on its own or serve as the focus of a walk overlooking the lagoon landscape.
At the end of the promenade, the Gouffre de la Vise also draws attention to the water beneath the surface: the spring drains some of the underground water from the limestone hills of the Montagne de la Moure and the Causse d’Aumelas. Visitors who want to learn more about this connection can also take the easy, accessible-to-all “Histoire des trois mers et de l’eau thermale” tour. It explains the links between Balaruc-les-Bains, the sea and underground waters. Check the latest information on booking arrangements in advance.
Garden Knowledge, Art and Culture
The Jardin Antique Méditerranéen shares knowledge about Mediterranean plant species and their uses. To do so, the grounds are laid out as seven gardens based on ancient garden archetypes. Guided tours with commentary take place weekly throughout the summer; if you plan to join one, it is worth checking the latest dates.
The visible remains of the Gallo-Roman basilica also reach far back in time: they date from the 3rd century AD. A stone bust of Neptune discovered there in 1981 gave rise to the hypothesis that the basilica was dedicated to the god as protector of the town. The dedication therefore remains a historical interpretation. The Romanesque chapel of Notre-Dame des Eaux, also known as Notre-Dame d’Aix, dates from the 12th century and was built from limestone blocks.
Contemporary culture has a home at the Le Piano-Tiroir cultural centre, which regularly offers a programme of events. This includes artist residencies, where audiences can discover stages of the creative process. Océanorue offers a different way to connect culture and nature: it is a public art-and-science project about the marine environment and climate change. The murals contain QR codes that passers-by can scan to access scientific information about the species depicted and climate change.
Activities for Different Interests
On the shores of the Thau Lagoon, the Manuréva nautical centre is set in a pine grove. It offers water-based activities for all ages and ability levels, including introductory sessions and rentals of stand-up paddleboards and kayaks. As activities may change, it is advisable to check the current offerings before making plans. For cycling trips, Thau Aventure in Balaruc-les-Bains rents conventional bicycles, electric bikes, tandems and tricycles. If you are counting on a particular type of bicycle, check availability in advance.
Balaruc-Les-Bains offers a variety of ways to explore the area, without requiring you to follow a set itinerary.
