Puilacher combines the character of a village shaped by its castle with historic buildings, vineyards and a cycling route through several communes. The village lies on the Puech hill. As a castle town at a crossroads, it has the character of a castrum with a concentric layout. This classification refers to the settlement as a whole; the château and church are individual buildings within this townscape. Visitors planning a stay here can therefore explore the settlement’s history, architecture and wine, or ride a specific stage of the cycling route.

The Château, Church and Local History

The château in Puilacher has been listed as a historic monument since 1984. Its present-day layout consists of two wings in a T-shape; one wall is attached to the Église de la Sainte-Trinité. The T-shape and the structural connection to the church offer two specific ways to understand the château’s architecture.

The Église de la Sainte-Trinité is a Romanesque church that was fortified in the 14th century. It appears to have developed from the former castle chapel, which later became the parish church. The church also contains two paintings by Auguste Barthélemy Glaize. Its architectural style, history of fortification and the cautious interpretation of its origins are distinct aspects of this place of worship.

A later building phase is also part of the townscape: in the early 1920s, a modern house with a monumental façade was built in Puilacher, representing Art Nouveau. Puilacher is documented in writing from the end of the 11th century. The timeline thus spans from these early records to a 20th-century house, extending well beyond a single building phase.

Cycling the Boucle de la vallée dorée

The 22 km “Boucle de la vallée dorée” cycling route connects Puilacher with Le Pouget, Vendémian, Plaissan, Belarga and Tressan. It is suitable for VTC or hybrid bikes. Its length gives you a clear idea of the distance to plan for; the connected communes also take the route beyond Puilacher. The route opened in 2024. Check the route information before setting off. There is a freely accessible self-service station along the route for inflating and repairing bicycles; check in advance whether it is currently available.

Winegrowing and Wine Tasting

The tasting room at “Mas des Olivettes,” on Avenue Notre Dame de Rouviège, welcomes visitors for wine tastings. As visiting arrangements may change, it is advisable to confirm them before your visit.

Another connection with winegrowing is Domaine du Pioch. Its vineyards stretch across terraces along the riverbank. The estate has grown vines for four generations, making and ageing its wines. The terraces describe the location of the vineyards, while the four generations reflect the history of grape growing and winemaking.
