Argelliers offers several reasons to visit: the Natura 2000 site “Gorges de l’Hérault,” medieval chapels, traces of Roman and Visigothic history, and the Saugras climbing area at Roc de Pampelune appeal to different interests. A shaded municipal park and an annual race held in June complete the picture. If you are looking for accommodation in Argelliers, you can choose what to focus on according to the purpose of your trip: nature conservation, architectural history or outdoor activities may be what tips the balance.
Natural surroundings in the “Gorges de l’Hérault” protected area
Argelliers is one of the 26 municipalities included in the Natura 2000 site “Gorges de l’Hérault.” The protected area includes habitats along the Hérault River, as well as habitats and species found in rocky areas, including bats. River habitats and rocky landscapes thus represent two distinct natural features of the area. Anyone interested in nature conservation can consider Argelliers in the context of this wider protected area. This combination of river and rocky habitats gives the natural side of a stay a specific setting.
Chapels and traces from several historical periods
The Chapelle Saint-Etienne has several construction phases: the nave and choir date from the 12th century. The porch dates from the 13th century, while the elevation and bell tower date from the 14th century. The dates therefore refer to different parts of the building, not to a single year of construction. Historically, the chapel was one of fourteen churches affiliated with the Priory of Gourdaignes, founded in 815. This connection links the building to an older ecclesiastical structure.
Another Romanesque chapel, Sainte-Foy, was built on a promontory overlooking the Hérault Valley. The Romanesque chapel of St-Jean-de-Combejargues lies near the Mas de Cournon; the site, now associated with the mas, is also linked to a Visigothic cemetery. Traces of Roman presence in Argelliers can be found at the Roman villa of Les Pradasses. Together, the Roman presence, the Visigothic cemetery and the medieval chapels represent different historical periods.
Climbing at Roc de Pampelune
The Saugras climbing area is located at Roc de Pampelune. Its roughly thirty routes run across limestone and are between 10 and 25 metres long; grades range from 3 to 7a. These details give a specific idea of the routes’ lengths and range of difficulty. The area is less than a five-minute walk from the car park. As the selection of routes may change, check the latest route information and access conditions before climbing.
Park, bus and annual trail race
Le Jardin Tranquille is a shaded municipal park in Argelliers that is open all year round; picnics are permitted. With its shade and picnic facilities, it offers a different way to spend time outdoors than the climbing area. The ARGELLIERS – CENTRE bus stop is less than a ten-minute walk from the park; the stop is served by the Montpellier–Montarnaud–Vailhauquès routes. Check the timetable for your travel date before setting off.
The Trail d’Argelliers is an annual sporting event in the Vallée de l’Hérault, held in Argelliers in June. If you would like to combine your stay with the race, check the dates for the relevant edition.
