Prades-Sur-Vernazobre lies between fragrant garrigue, the vineyards of the AOC Saint-Chinian and the green banks of the Vernazobre. In the village, façades of grey and yellow stone shape the streetscape. Heritage, riverside scenery and wine experiences give the place its distinctive character. When planning your trip, you can choose between architectural details, historical references, hiking and cycling options, and visits focused on wine.
Village and Heritage
The Église Sainte-Marguerite is adorned with 19th-century stained-glass windows. The heritage of Prades-Sur-Vernazobre includes the ruins of the Église Saint-Martin de Dounaro. The Chapelle Saint-Martin-de-Dounaro is considered evidence of the presence of the Visigoths in the region. Together, these similarly named Saint-Martin sites reflect different historical associations: the ruins are part of the heritage, while the chapel is linked to an interpretation of the Visigoths’ presence in the region. The village streetscape thus brings together a specific architectural detail and several forms of heritage.
Landscape along the Vernazobre
Along the Vernazobre, the green vegetation includes alders, Aleppo pines, holm oaks and strawberry trees. Further along the river near the village, there are also centuries-old olive trees and old mulberry trees dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. These old trees add a cultural and historical dimension to the riverside vegetation. The surroundings can be explored through more than just garrigue and vineyards; the greenery along the river and the history of its trees are also part of their character.
Hiking and Cycling
The Saint-Martin-de-Dounaro hiking trail starts from the car park at Prades-Sur-Vernazobre town hall. This named starting point helps you find your way at the beginning of the hike. Local access conditions may change; check them before setting out.
Mountain bike circuit no. 19, “Prades-La Maurerie,” is an 8 km route. Vinebike offers guided electric-bike rides through the vineyards around Saint-Chinian, with information about winemaking along the way. Rides start in Prades-Sur-Vernazobre by arrangement. A Vinebike ride also includes a visit to a wine estate: you learn about the stages of winemaking, followed by a wine tasting at the estate. The cycling options differ in format: a named circuit is complemented by guided e-bike rides with a wine focus. Check availability before your trip and confirm arrangements, as they may change.
Wine Visits and Local Producers
