Le Cros lies above the Gorges de la Virenque, where the Hérault, Gard and Aveyron departments meet. The Sud Larzac PR hiking route passes through the village. In addition to hiking opportunities, megaliths, historical landmarks and agro-pastoral heritage shape Le Cros’s cultural character.
Hiking trails with different points of reference
The Sud Larzac PR hiking route is a challenging 16.8-kilometre circular trail that passes through Le Cros. If the route is changed, its length and difficulty rating may also change. The trail passes the Croix des Sotchs, a monument classified as a historic monument. This circular walk therefore combines a hike with a specified distance and a named cultural heritage site. Difficulty and distance are useful criteria when planning to include the route in your stay.
The Le Ségala du Cros circular trail starts at Place du Château in Le Cros. This gives you a specific starting point; check the trail markers on site. Compared with the Sud Larzac loop, Le Ségala is identified by its starting point, while the other loop can be assessed by its length and difficulty. Keep the two trail names distinct when planning.
The Le Tour du Mont Estremal circular trail passes through landscapes of dolomite, cultivated land and pastoral farming. Here, the composition of the landscape takes centre stage, whereas the Sud Larzac route is defined by its distance and difficulty rating. When comparing hiking options, you can therefore use different points of reference: a circular trail with a specified distance and a challenging rating, and a trail whose landscape is shaped by dolomite, cultivated land and pastoral farming.
Cultural heritage and historical layers
Several megaliths can be found in Le Cros. The Château du Cros was the summer residence of the Bishopric of Lodève. The lavognes and gloriettes preserve the living memory of agro-pastoral practices. Together, these sites offer different ways to explore the past: the château points to the former role of the bishopric, while the lavognes and gloriettes evoke rural practices.
The Bergerie de l’Hôpital in Le Cros was a former medieval hospital. The associated church is now obscured by later additions. These two aspects are connected: its former use as a hospital and the church associated with the site.
The Grotte de Mounios lies on the southern edge of the Larzac plateau. Archaeological evidence points to funerary use in the Late Neolithic; the cave was also used to collect and store water. The different historical themes can be distinguished chronologically: evidence from the cave points to the Late Neolithic, while the Bergerie was a former medieval hospital. The area’s cultural history thus brings together archaeological interpretations and a later historical context of use.
