A discovery trail on Serre-Rond, historic buildings and more than a hundred wells, fountains and wayside crosses offer different ways to explore Montaud. There are also two waymarked hiking trails with distinct destinations and a winegrowing tradition reflected in the cooperative winery, which has been operating since 1938. If you are looking for accommodation, you can plan your stay around the landscape, architectural history or regional produce.
Hiking trails with different focuses
The intercommunal discovery trail on Serre-Rond was created in collaboration with Montaud. Its eleven themed panels cover forest, garrigue and the risk of forest fires. Alongside the landscape, the trail therefore focuses on the threat of forest fires and why it matters. If you are looking for a hike with a particular theme, this trail offers a clear framework.
Two waymarked hiking trails offer different highlights. The Sentier des crêtes provides impressive views over the plain and the coast. The Sentier du Serre-Rond leads hikers to the summit of the same name, between Saint-Drézéry and Montaud. Their destinations therefore differ: views are the focus of the Sentier des crêtes, while the Sentier du Serre-Rond leads to a summit. These offer two distinct reasons to choose a route: wide-ranging views over the plain and coast, or a clearly named summit as your destination.
Architecture and local history
The architecture walk in Montaud takes you past historic buildings, passageways and narrow streets. The church, which dates back to the 13th century, provides a specific historical landmark. A walk through Montaud also passes more than a hundred wells, fountains and wayside crosses. The exact route of this walk may change; check it before your visit.
The Château de Montlaur is listed in the register of Monuments historiques. Its history spans from a military fortress built in the 11th century to a residential château dating from the early 16th century. Access is prohibited because the property is privately owned and the surrounding area is dangerous. Check the visiting conditions again before travelling there.
Winegrowing and local produce
The cooperative winery in Montaud has been operating since 1938 and supports the promotion of local produce. Winegrowing is therefore one of the village’s long-standing economic and cultural themes. It offers a different focus from the hiking trails and architectural history: here, the emphasis is on produce and its regional context.
Les Celliers du Val des Pins is also based in Montaud. The organisation brings together a 600-hectare winegrowing area around Montaud, Saint-Bauzille de Montmel, Sussargues, Saint-Drézéry and Castries. The area thus extends beyond Montaud and covers several municipalities. Its base in Montaud and the broader geographical reach of the winegrowing area provide two distinct points of reference for the region’s wine culture.
Plan your stay
When planning your trip, you can prioritise these themes according to your interests: the waymarked trails offer different landscape destinations, the architecture walk and the church explore local history, and the winery and winegrowing area focus on local produce.
