Saint-Jean-De-Cuculles offers several clearly distinct highlights to help you plan your trip: a botanical trail, a viewpoint with religious significance, the architectural history of the priory and wine experiences. This lets you shape your stay around the things that interest you locally, rather than assuming a set order. Nature, architecture and wine are different reasons to get to know the village better; the following information will help you distinguish between them.
Nature and views
The botanical trail in Saint-Jean-De-Cuculles is marked and equipped with 62 information panels. They describe various plant species, putting botanical knowledge firmly at the heart of the route. Notre-Dame de la Cabasse offers a different focus: from there, the view stretches across the village and the surrounding plain to Pic Saint-Loup. A footpath leads to Notre-Dame de la Cabasse. The statue there is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. If you choose what to see based on its subject, you will find two distinct options: descriptions of plants along the trail, or landscapes and religious heritage at Notre-Dame. The dedication to Mary adds a cultural dimension to the viewpoint; the view itself takes in the village, plain and mountain.
The priory and traces of village history
The priory brings together several historical periods. It includes a small church built in the 11th century. Its single-nave, barrel-vaulted hall can be understood as one church nave with a lengthwise vault. In the 14th century, the church was raised by one storey and fitted with machicolations; it served the villagers as a refuge and watchtower. This makes it possible to distinguish the building’s design from its later defensive and watch functions. A Visigothic tombstone dating from the 5th to the 8th century can also be seen in the priory. It predates the 11th-century church and brings an even earlier period into view. Another tangible trace of village history is on La Route des puits: a village well there was dug in 1880 and is 18 metres deep. The wells along La Route des puits have been preserved and enhanced.
Wine, nature and activities
Domaine de Mortiès is located in Saint-Jean-De-Cuculles on the southern slope of Pic Saint-Loup. The estate covers 14 hectares of vineyards surrounded by 85 hectares of woodland. These figures provide a concrete comparison between the vineyard area and its wooded surroundings. Free wine tastings are offered at the estate. Les Remparts de Cuculles offers a day focused on grape harvesting and winemaking, introducing visitors to grape-harvesting and natural winemaking techniques. The experiences have different focuses: the tasting is about sampling wine at the estate, while the day on offer introduces visitors to harvesting and winemaking.
A nature area in Saint-Jean-De-Cuculles at the foot of Pic Saint-Loup offers large zip lines as well as fun and sports courses; the Accrobranche experience includes both types of course. This offers a different focus from the botanical trail, whose panels describe plant species. A small car park marks the access point for finding your way around Pont de Yorgues.
