Roujan can be explored from two perspectives: the history of individual buildings and the landscape of seven small hills surrounding the town. Locally, they are called “pechs.” If you are looking for accommodation in Roujan, you can first decide whether historic architecture, a cycling loop or a specific wine purchase will shape your stay.

Churches and Architectural History

An imposing tower dating from the 14th century stands in the historic centre. The Église Saint-Laurent in Roujan is a protected historic church; it was listed by decree on 14 April 1954. It includes building phases from the last quarter of the 13th century, as well as from the 14th, 18th and 19th centuries. The church therefore offers a way to trace developments across several periods rather than reducing it to a single construction date.

The Chapelle Saint-Nazaire is a fully preserved pre-Romanesque church of the Visigothic tradition, with the exception of its roof frame. It has been classified as a historic monument by decree since 9 July 1981. The archway of the former Saint Laurent entrance in Roujan has also been preserved.

The terms themselves are useful for putting these buildings into context: “pre-Romanesque” refers to a period before the Romanesque era, while “Visigothic tradition” adds the chapel’s stated architectural classification. Saint-Laurent has a different emphasis: its building phases span several centuries. When comparing historic buildings, you can set a clearly identified tradition against a longer sequence of building phases. A stylistic classification and a sequence of building phases answer different questions: what characterises the architecture, and which periods are represented in a building?

Hills and Cycling Loop

Seven small hills surround Roujan; locally, they are called “pechs.” For a cycling trip, the Boucle cyclo n°3 is a specific reference point: the cycling loop passes through Roujan and other villages. The description of the landscape and the route refer to different things—the former to the surroundings, the latter to a course. Check the current route before setting off, as route information may change.

The Château-Abbaye de Cassan

The Château-Abbaye de Cassan houses a 12th-century Romanesque church, a remnant of the former priory. You can stroll through the garden and enjoy views of the building. Guided tours for organised groups are offered throughout the year by reservation. If you are planning a group tour, book in advance and check the current arrangements.

Wine Sales and Walking Distance

The Caveau de Roujan of Les Caves Molière sells wine by the bottle, for individual purchase and in Bag-in-Box format. As the selection for sale may change, check the current range before your visit. The ROUJAN – Mairie stop is less than a ten-minute walk from the Caveau de Roujan of Les Caves Molière. This gives you a specific walking distance to consider if you include the sales outlet in your plans.
