Cournonsec’s partly preserved medieval appearance and Mediterranean garrigue give it two distinct focal points. The town’s history includes the château, the Protestant temple and the washhouse; winemaking and cycling turn the focus to landscape and land use. For planning your trip, these themes can be considered separately: the buildings mark historical traces, while Boucle Cyclo No. 7 runs through vineyards and garrigue.

Building history across several periods

Château de Cournonsec was built as a hexagonal fortress on the site of the former Roman villa of Saint Giorgio. It overlooks the Way of St James, the Chemin de Compostelle. Its distinctive shape and former Roman site give the building a specific historical setting. Cournonsec has preserved parts of its medieval appearance. Today’s Saint-Christophe Church could be the medieval Church of Saint-Pierre of Cournonsec. The Protestant temple was rebuilt in 1818. The washhouse is also part of the town’s history: the Les Amis du Lavoir association restored it. Together, these buildings represent different aspects of the past—fortification, a possible medieval church identity, Protestant history and the restoration of a washhouse.

Garrigue, winemaking and dry-stone construction

Mediterranean garrigue surrounds Cournonsec, with holm oaks and kermes oaks shaping the landscape. Its history of land use includes the clapas: piles of stones created in the 16th and 17th centuries when land was cleared for grapevines and olive trees. The landscape therefore offers two distinct signs: the oaks that define it and the clapas as evidence of earlier work on the land. The commune’s wine estates are also among the sights worth visiting. Alongside the clapas, they complete the picture of winemaking, as the clapas were created in connection with growing grapevines and olives.

On walks through the region’s garrigue and vineyards, you may come across capitelles: small dry-stone huts. The region’s small dry-stone walls were built by earlier generations and maintained over several generations. Together, these structures show how dry-stone construction is found in the region’s cultural landscape, both in small huts and in walls.

Cycling route and local sport

Boucle Cyclo No. 7 is a specific reference point for planning a cycling trip. It follows a protected cycle path through Cournonsec, then switches at the edge of town to quiet side roads through vineyards and garrigue. The route thus includes different types of sections: the cycle path and side roads can be considered as distinct types of route. Check current conditions before setting out; infrastructure, traffic and road surfaces can change.

Tambourin is also played in Cournonsec. Alongside the cycling route, this sport adds another facet to the picture of the town: Cournonsec can be described not only through its historic buildings and surrounding landscape, but also through a local sporting tradition.
