Gabian combines a distinctive village layout with traces of its oil and water history. As a Circulade, the village lies at the confluence of the Thongue and the Lène. The historic centre, the former Font de l’Oli and the La Resclauze site represent different themes; wine also features in the visitor experience through the Domaine de Cadables. You can explore Gabian according to your interests, focusing on its layout, historic technology or wine.

Village layout and historic water supply

The signposted walking route leads through the historic centre and offers a practical way to appreciate the village layout as a point of interest in its own right. The river setting and the settlement pattern answer different questions: the Thongue and the Lène mark the confluence, while the term Circulade describes the character of the village. If you are particularly interested in Gabian’s townscape, this provides a clearly defined starting point for your visit.

The La Resclauze site on the Sauveplaine plateau is one of Gabian’s attractions. The La Resclauze spring supplied water to Béziers through a water intake and a Roman aqueduct. A water intake is the point where water is collected; an aqueduct carries it onward.

The Font de l’Oli lies less than a kilometre south of Gabian. Together with the walking route through the historic centre, it gives you a clear way to plan your visit: the route leads through the village centre, while the former oil fountain lies to the south. This allows you to distinguish between focusing on the centre and taking a separate look at the oil history.

Oil history in Gabian

The former oil fountain, Font de l’Oli, was listed as a historic monument by decree of 7 November 2016. It comprises a ruined hut, a network of tunnels and two silted-up basins. These remains give the oil history tangible form: the hut, tunnels and basins identify different features of the site, while the name “former oil fountain” records its historical connection with oil.

The Musée du Pétrole is also located in Gabian’s town hall. If you are planning a visit, check current visiting arrangements in advance.

Wine and planning your visit

The Domaine de Cadables winery produces wines with the IGP Languedoc designation. Product designations can change; if the exact designation matters to your choice, check it in advance. Wine thus adds another point of interest to the village’s history and technology. Travellers wishing to discover different sides of Gabian can choose between its settlement pattern, water supply, oil history and wine.

The Domaine de Cadables welcomes visitors and offers tours by appointment. Arrange your appointment before travelling. This is important when planning: a visit to the winery requires an advance arrangement, unlike a signposted route through the historic centre.
