At the confluence of the Boyne and Hérault rivers, Cazouls-d’Hérault brings together river landscapes, Occitan traditions and traces of a long local history. This history is especially tangible at the former Templar commandery: founded around 1150, it preserves medieval building features. A 19th-century church, a traditional January celebration and paths across the plain offer different ways to explore the area. When planning your visit, decide whether architecture and local history or landscape and outdoor activities are your priority.

Templar commandery and medieval traces

The former Templar commandery complex includes a square keep, an old chapel and former agricultural buildings. The courtyard can be accessed via Rue des Templiers; medieval traces are visible from there, including the remains of pointed arches and two medieval staircases. The former complex is now used as a privately run guesthouse and is privately owned. Guided tours about the history of Cazouls-d’Hérault are offered year-round.

The Château, a former Templar residence, is fully protected, including its park and enclosure, under an order dated 27 June 2011.

Church, feast day and local history

The Church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul was built in 1849 based on a design commissioned from the architect Louis-Alphonse Corvetto. Its sundial, inscribed “annada 2004,” was made when the building was restored and its exterior render renewed. Saint Sebastian is celebrated in Cazouls-d’Hérault every year around 20 January, when his relic is venerated. If you would like to include the celebration in your travel plans, check the exact date in advance. The house at 3 Plan Neuf belonged to the family of Louis Paulhan (1883–1963), a pioneer of aviation.

River landscapes and paths

The levees, built from 1852 onward, were intended to protect against flooding from the Hérault. Today they form a promenade through the plain’s natural landscape. The Ceinture verte runs between the village and the waterways, offering a way to experience the area’s natural heritage. Mountain biking circuit No. 10, “Entre vignes et fleuve,” passes through Cazouls-d’Hérault. Check the conditions on this route again before setting out.

Tambourin ball and getting there

Tambourin ball is part of local sporting life. This regional tradition sees two teams of five players compete against each other. The Cazouls tambourin ball club has been around for more than a hundred years and hosts European championships. Alongside the historic buildings, this living sporting tradition offers another distinct focus in the village.
