Pouzolles combines striking traces of its fortified past with vineyard-covered slopes and wine-related offerings. The château, chapel and Rue des Murs tell different chapters of the village’s history; the Canto Merle circular trail leads from the narrow streets into a landscape with a long winegrowing tradition. This gives you clear themes to build into your trip planning: local history and a stroll through the village, vineyards and a mill ruin outside it, as well as tastings and seasonal festivities.

Traces of local history

The Porte Saint-Martin, known today by local residents as “le porche”, is the only surviving remnant of Pouzolles’ former fortification walls. Rue des Murs offers another glimpse into the village’s former defences: it runs within the old walls, and some houses there retain walls more than a metre thick. You can therefore encounter the history of the fortifications both in a surviving structure and in individual house walls.

The Château de Pouzolles is thought to date from the 15th century; behind the entrance is a broad terrace with sweeping views. The château’s chapel became the parish church in 1556, after residents of Saint-Martin de Grézan settled around the château following the plague epidemic. Together, these places show different aspects of the past: the château’s approximate dating and the chapel’s specific development into a parish church.

Between the vineyard slopes and the Thongue

At 205 metres, Pech Pétou is the highest of the seven hills around Pouzolles. Nearby, a vineyard hut stands at the intersection of four paths. The Canto Merle circular trail leads from the narrow streets up into the vineyard slopes and through landscapes that bear witness to a very long history of winegrowing. It also includes a detour to a mill ruin; check its condition on site.

The Allées Frédéric Greilhet offer a different kind of landscape: a broad, shady promenade lined with plane trees on the banks of the Thongue. This gives you two distinct options: vineyard slopes and a mill ruin along the trail, or a tree-lined riverside promenade. The contrast can help you decide whether to focus your stay more on the countryside beyond the village streets or on the riverside.

Wine experiences and seasonal events

At the Domaine Bonian winery’s wine-tasting room in Pouzolles, you can sample the estate’s full range of wines for free, including “Opus” and “Douceur d’Automne”. As opening arrangements may change, check them before your visit. Domaine de l’Arjolle offers free tours of its barrel cellar and vineyard, followed by a complimentary wine tasting. It is also advisable to check the visiting arrangements in advance.

The Feast of Notre-Dame de la Pitié is still celebrated in Pouzolles on the Friday before Palm Sunday. Check the annual calendar for the specific date in your travel year. During the summer festivities at the Allées Frédéric Greilhet, a dancing brasucade is held every Friday evening; check the seasonal programme before your trip as well. The pre-Palm Sunday celebration and the summer programme’s Friday evenings thus give you two different time windows for a visit.
