Lodève brings together several different discoveries: Gothic architecture, exhibitions on the history of the Earth and prehistory, traditional weaving and hiking trails across the limestone plateau. This makes the town a destination for anyone who wants to combine culture and scenery. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between scheduled visits in town and hikes: some visits have special access arrangements, and each trail has its own estimated times and conditions.

Cathedral and town history

The Cathédrale Saint-Fulcran is a building in the Gothic style of Languedoc. Its features include Mauverney windows, a large organ, a cloister, chapels and a bell tower. Its heritage protection covers different components and dates: the bell tower has been protected as a historic monument since 1840, and the cloister and episcopal complex since 2005. Those interested in architecture and heritage history will find more here than just a single façade. A guided climb to the top of the cathedral offers 360-degree views over the Lodévois as far as the Mediterranean; this experience may vary, so check current availability in advance.

Exhibitions and crafts

The Musée de Lodève is housed in the former private mansion of Cardinal Hercule de Fleury and has a contemporary extension dating from 2018. Covering more than 1,000 square metres, it offers three permanent visitor trails. These take visitors through the history of the Earth and prehistory, as well as the work of sculptor Paul Dardé. The three themes focus on different subjects, so you can tailor your visit to your interests. Check the museum’s current access arrangements before travelling.

Paul Dardé is also associated with another place in Lodève: the Halle Dardé is housed in a market hall built in 1819 on the site of the former parish church of Saint-Pierre and displays two monumental works by the sculptor, who was born in Lodève. It is only open during special events, so check the current programme before visiting. The Manufacture Nationale de la Savonnerie offers another insight into local art. As the only branch of the Manufacture nationale des Gobelins, it hand-weaves prestigious carpets for embassies, national monuments and the Élysée Palace. Guided tours are offered throughout the year, giving you the chance to watch the weavers at work. As access and booking arrangements may change, it is advisable to check before your trip.

Explore the Plateau du Grézac on foot

The Plateau du Grézac can be reached on foot from Lodève’s town centre and lies at an altitude of more than 700 metres. Jurassic limestone and dolomite shape the landscape, which includes dolomitic cliffs and great ecological diversity. Well-marked hiking and trail loops lead to 360-degree panoramas over Lodève and the Causse du Larzac; the wider views also take in Lac du Salagou and the Lodévois’s distinctive volcanic landforms. Check local conditions before setting out.

There are two hiking options of different lengths to help you plan your time: the Randonnée du Livre du Lodévois is a 7-kilometre circular walking route, with a stated duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes. Conditions and fire restrictions on this route may change seasonally. The two-day hiking section of the GR®653, the Voie d’Arles, between Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert and Lodève is considerably longer. Check the relevant route description and conditions in advance. For other ways to explore the archaeological and historical heritage of the Lodévois, the Groupe Archéologique du Lodévois organises walks, guided tours, conferences and exhibitions, and publishes related articles; confirm specific activities and dates with the organisation.
