Montpeyroux combines a fortified heritage site with hiking trails through a landscape of limestone, vineyards and garrigue. The Castellas is a cultural and historical highlight; the circular hike there also offers views of the site and the Plaine de l’Hérault geotourism area. At Joncas, there is also a deep limestone gorge and a climbing area. You can tailor your stay to your interests in history, hiking or climbing.
The Castellas: history and access
The Castellas of Montpeyroux is a fortified site on a hill overlooking the transhumance route. A castrum is documented here in 999. A description from 1212 mentions a surviving crenellated wall and three gates, two of which had been walled up at the time. Since the decree of February 26, 2025, the Castellas has been listed as a Monument historique.
When visiting, it is important to distinguish clearly between the interior and the exterior. The interior of the Castellas is not open to the public for safety reasons. The hike, the walk around the walls and the viewpoint, however, are accessible independently year-round. You can therefore plan an outdoor visit without assuming you will be able to enter the site. As safety conditions may change, check the latest access information before your visit.
Hiking through the landscape
Montpeyroux lies at the foot of the limestone Grands Causses and at the beginning of an alluvial plain. The local hiking trails run through vineyards and garrigue. These landscape trails add a focus of their own to a visit to the Castellas: instead of heading only to the site, you can explore the surrounding area on foot.
The “Randonnée du Castellas de Montpeyroux” is a moderately difficult 10-kilometre circular hike. The route is listed as taking three hours, with 440 metres of ascent and 440 metres of descent. The distance, duration and elevation gain together provide a concrete guide for planning your day. The stated duration helps you treat the circular hike as a dedicated block of time; the moderate difficulty rating is another guide when choosing a route.
As a Géorando route, it offers panoramic views of the Plaine de l’Hérault geotourism area in the Terres d’Hérault Geopark. It also gives you an elevated view of the Castellas and passes along its walls. The hike thus combines views of the wider landscape with a distinctive perspective on the fortified site.
The Joncas gorge and climbing
Joncas is a dry gorge at the foot of Mont St-Baudille, cut more than 60 metres deep into the limestone. The Joncas climbing area is located in the Gorges de l’Hérault Grand Site de France. It is described as having more than 70 routes for climbers, with a range of grades from 2 to 8 and individual routes up to 9a.
Hiking and climbing offer different ways to shape your stay. The circular route combines the Castellas with landscape and panoramic views; at Joncas, the gorge and climbing routes take centre stage. If you want to plan your days around one of these activities, the detailed hike information or the stated range of climbing grades can help you choose the right itinerary.
