Saint-Brès lies on the edge of the garrigue. At the entrance to the village, the Vieux Pont connects Baillargues and Saint-Brès; the Bérange separates the built-up areas of the two towns. In the 17th century, the river was navigable and served to transport goods, especially wine, to the port of Candillargues. This brings together the Bérange’s geographical role as a boundary and its former function as a transport route.

River and Village Background

From the Vieux Pont, a noria can be seen on the road toward Baillargues; restoration work has been carried out on it. The original church of Saint-Brès was medieval. During the Wars of Religion, known as the Rohan Wars, it was destroyed and rebuilt from 1635 onward. If you would like to place the church’s history in context, it spans the period from the Middle Ages through its destruction to its reconstruction from 1635 onward.

Festivals and Traditions

The festival in honour of Saint Brice is celebrated on 13 November with a large village celebration. Abrivados are now held during festivals in Saint-Brès and are part of the local folklore. In the Course camarguaise, men dressed in white remove the cockade, tassels and ribbons from a bull’s horns; this sporting tradition is bloodless. Other major events include “Un Printemps sous les arbres” and the evening event on 13 July. If one of these events is the reason for your trip, check its date against your travel dates. When planning your trip, distinguish between the two: abrivados are part of festival folklore, while the Course camarguaise is a bloodless sporting tradition in which items attached to the bull are removed.

Hiking and Cycling

The Nature et Loisirs hiking club offers guided daytime hikes. One or two guides who have previously explored the routes accompany the group. The varied routes provide access to beautiful nature reserves and places of interest. If you are planning to take part, check the participation requirements before your trip.

The cycling route between Saint-Geniès-des-Mourgues and Saint-Brès is 3.3 km long, has an ascent of 31 m and is listed as taking 14 minutes. For your day’s plans, you can choose between different options: guided daytime hikes or a cycling link with details on distance, ascent and duration. Check current route conditions before setting off.
