Saint-Martin-de-Londres combines an old village with a variety of ways to explore the surrounding area on foot. In the village, the Romanesque Église Saint-Martin shapes the landscape; walking options range from an approximately three-hour trail at the Ravin des Arcs to a 68-kilometre route designed for four days of walking. When planning, it is worth keeping these scales in mind: would you mainly like to explore the village, plan a single hike, or make a multi-day route the focus?
Village, Church and Landscape
Located at the foot of Pic Saint-Loup, Saint-Martin-de-Londres is surrounded by garrigue and vineyards. The landscape is therefore a tangible part of the destination, alongside the village itself; the routes described offer a way to include it in your stay.
The Église Saint-Martin is a Romanesque building dating from the beginning of the 12th century. Its unusually rounded transepts and dome on pendentives are particularly striking. Pendentives are curved transition surfaces that support a dome above a square space; the term helps explain this architectural detail. By decree of 16 February 1900, the apse, transepts, dome, porch and two bays of the nave were partially protected as historic monuments.
Walking by Time and Distance
The Ravin des Arcs area lies within the municipal boundaries of Notre-Dame-de-Londres and Saint-Martin-de-Londres and includes a natural arch formed by the Lamalou River. A purpose-built trail passes through green surroundings to reach the arch. The hike is moderately difficult, 5 kilometres long and takes about 3 hours. Check local trail conditions before travelling.
A much longer option is the GR de Pays route “Entre Séranne & Gorges de l’Hérault”: it is 68 kilometres long, passes through Saint-Martin-de-Londres and is designed for four days of walking. Route conditions and access information may vary seasonally. Section N° 5 of Passa Meridia climbs to the old village, passes the church and winds through the narrow streets; trail conditions may also vary seasonally. Another route option is the Tour des villages du Pic, which passes through Mas-de-Londres on its way to Saint-Martin-de-Londres.
In terms of time, the options range from a moderately difficult hike of about three hours to a 68-kilometre route for four days of walking. Passa Meridia N° 5 offers a different focus on the village, with its climb to the old village and route through the narrow streets.
