La Tour-Sur-Orb offers a distinctive contrast: medieval buildings shape the heritage of Boussagues, while hiking trails and the Via Ferrata les Balcons de l’Orb offer other ways to spend your time. The Four à Chaux adds its own note with its industrial history. When looking for a hotel, you can first decide whether your stay will focus more on culture, hiking, or the via ferrata.
Boussagues: fortified settlement and building phases
The Church of Notre-Dame de la Pitié in Boussagues combines architectural elements from three distinctly different centuries. The Romanesque choir dates from the 12th century, the bell-tower porch from the 14th, and the nave from the 16th century. This sequence makes the church a building with clearly distinguishable construction phases. Those interested in architecture can view these elements as part of a long development rather than assigning them to just one period.
Boussagues is a fortified medieval settlement. Its named buildings include the Castellas and Château Bas castles, the Renaissance manor house Maison du Bailli, also known as Manoir de Toulouse Lautrec, and two churches. Medieval ramparts, numerous characteristic narrow streets, and historic building façades are also part of the settlement. Together, these elements show different aspects of the town: fortifications, residential architecture, and churches are all part of its inherited built heritage.
Industrial history and ways to visit
The Four Ă Chaux offers a different perspective on the history of La Tour-Sur-Orb. It was built in 1854 and is considered an exceptional example of 19th-century industrial heritage. In 2010, it was protected as a historic monument. This 19th-century industrial building complements the medieval themes of Boussagues. Visitors can choose from guided immersive tours, self-guided visits for all audiences, and treasure hunts for children.
Hiking trails and Via Ferrata
There are also different types of trails to choose from for hiking. Flat, accessible trails run along the Orb and the Mare rivers and across the Causse near Boussagues. The GR7 is one of the many hiking trails in the commune of La Tour-Sur-Orb and is a long-distance route between the Vosges and the Pyrenees. You can start by choosing between flat trails with the local features mentioned here and a long-distance hiking route.
The Via Ferrata les Balcons de l’Orb adds a via ferrata to the hiking trails. Access is via the hamlet of Bousquet de la Balme, between Bédarieux and La Tour-Sur-Orb. The two sections differ considerably in duration: the lower section takes 30 minutes, while the upper section takes one hour and 30 minutes. The upper section therefore takes three times as long as the lower one. Access is free year-round, and safety equipment is required. Check the safety requirements before setting off.
