The former Fontcaude Abbey, the limestone formations of the Barres rocheuses and the wine offerings at Domaine des Mathurins each give Cazedarnes a different character. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether to focus on cultural history, hiking trails or wine.

Fontcaude Abbey and religious tradition

The former Premonstratensian abbey of Fontcaude dates from the 12th century, is located in Cazedarnes and is listed as a historic monument. The complex includes an abbey church, a cloister, a sculpture museum, a 12th-century bell foundry and an oil mill. The site thus brings together church architecture, art and facilities associated with crafts and production.

Every year on 25 July, the Confrérie Jacquaire de Septimie holds its chapter at the abbey during the feast dedicated to the Apostle. Gregorian chant concerts are also held there. The hamlet of Fontcaude is a stop on the Way of St James (GR 787)—another facet of the area's religious tradition.

Limestone landscape and geological history

The Barres rocheuses de Cazedarnes is a classified natural area with striking limestone cliffs. Their formation dates back 65 million years, when limestone was deposited in a lake. During the formation of the Pyrenees, the layer was later folded; erosion then created depressions between the surviving rocky ridges.

The trails are suitable for walks and offer views of vineyards and garrigue. In clear weather, you can also see part of the Languedoc plain. The area thus combines a distinctive landscape with a long geological history, which can be traced in the shapes of the rocky ridges and depressions.

Hikes and panoramic views

The walking route described as a short hike to Fontcaude Abbey is moderately difficult, 8.4 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 240 metres. Do not mistake “short” for an easy rating: the route is explicitly classified as moderate. A shorter option follows the Fontcaude spur of the GR®78-7 through garrigue and pine landscapes. Trail conditions and access may change; check them before setting out.

The Puech de la Vigne Nègre route offers panoramic views of Caroux, Espinouse and the Avant-monts. The Fontcaude hike can be assessed by its difficulty, length and elevation gain, while the named panoramic views are the main attraction of Puech de la Vigne Nègre. This lets you choose between specific route details and a focus on the views.

Wine and activities at Domaine des Mathurins

Domaine des Mathurins offers year-round tastings of AOC Saint-Chinian wines and Pays d’Oc wines. The vineyards extend across the entire village of Cazedarnes. Other activities include tours, vineyard walks, classical music concerts and themed evenings.

If you have a particular date in mind for a visit, it is a good idea to check the dates for concerts and themed evenings in advance. The year-round tastings are a distinct offering alongside these other activities, linking the wine experience with a variety of event formats.

Saint-Amans Church and its frescoes

Saint-Amans Church, including its wall decorations, was listed as a historic monument in 2012. Its frescoes depict scenes from the Old Testament and the life of Saint Roch. The church thus brings together two distinct pictorial themes: biblical narratives and scenes from a saint’s life.

As of 2 May 2026, the frescoes could not be viewed because the building was unstable. Before visiting, check whether access is currently possible.
