Assignan lies on a plateau between vineyards and garrigue. Wine, art, a walk and historic buildings reveal different sides of the village. To plan your visit, you can focus on specific experiences: a wine tour, the summer gallery or a clearly defined walking route. This can help you decide which themes you want to shape your stay.

Wine and architecture in Castigno

The Castigno wine village in Assignan is an oenotourism complex created through the purchase and renovation of more than ten houses. Château Castigno winery also makes its own architectural statement: it stands amid the vineyards, is shaped like a wine bottle and clad in cork. It was designed by Lionel Jadot.

The winery offers a guided tour with a tasting of five organic Château Castigno wines and a 180-degree view of the vineyards. Another wine experience is the “Safari dans les vignes”, which starts in Assignan. It includes a ride in an off-road 4×4 vehicle, a guided winery tour and a tasting of organic Castigno wines. If you plan to take part in either experience, check the latest dates and terms in advance: schedules and commercial conditions may change.

Les Barralets: a walk with set details

The Les Barralets loop is 6.5 kilometres long and is designed to take two hours; its difficulty is described as very easy. The route passes through garrigue and stands of kermes oak and mastic trees. It also crosses a dry limestone plateau and offers panoramic views of the Donnadieu and Babeau-Bouldoux valleys. This combination of distance, duration and scenery makes the walk a concrete way to explore the area on foot. Route conditions may change; check them before setting out.

You can also plan your journey there: the walking route is less than a ten-minute walk from the ASSIGNAN – CENTRE bus stop. The stop is served by the “Corresp. Ets Béziers/Marché St Chinian” route. If you plan to take the bus, check the current timetable, as services may change.

Art and historical traces

The Galerie Rue de Paris hosts contemporary art exhibitions every summer. Its programme includes painting, drawing, photography, video and conceptual art. The seasonal exhibition programme may vary from year to year. The gallery complements the landscape and wine experiences with an opportunity to discover different forms of contemporary art.

The Church of Saint-Pierre also offers specific historical and architectural points of interest. The present-day church was built in the village centre in 1684, after the previous church burned down in the 17th century. Its nave has three bays; a keystone is dated 1701. An original clock of notable technical heritage value powers the bell tower. The village’s historic character also includes a medieval tower, which serves as a landmark visible from afar. An old fortification is connected with the history of the seigneury that once ruled the village.
