Bédarieux can be explored via trails through the countryside, climbing routes, historic buildings and markets. The town is designated a “ville porte” (gateway town) to the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut Languedoc. Arbre et Aventure 34 is located in Bédarieux, in Grand Orb and in the heart of this nature park. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between the different highlights: Passa Païs follows a former railway line, while other trails pass through the hills and landscapes around Bédarieux.
Countryside and trails around Bédarieux
The Passa Païs Greenway runs between Bédarieux and Mazamet for more than 75 kilometres along a former railway line. Motor vehicles are not allowed on the route. It is reserved for walkers, cyclists, runners, rollerbladers and horse riders. Before setting out, check for any temporary restrictions in place locally.
The Balcons de l’Orb circular trail offers a different kind of landscape. It leads through pine trees and garrigue on the heights of Bédarieux, with views over the Orb Valley and the Caroux. The route also includes a plateau with dry-stone structures and a stretch alongside the Orb. Those looking for a circular walk through this landscape rather than the longer former railway line will find a distinctly different route here.
Hiking, climbing and adventure courses
The hike to Roc Rouge passes through a landscape of causses, farmsteads, mazets, paved paths and dry-stone capitelles. Along the way, there are panoramic views of Bédarieux and the Caroux massif. The starting point is Bédarieux railway station, accessible via the Train de l’Aubrac line. As train services depend on the timetable, check current connections before travelling.
Roc Rouge is also an equipped climbing area: its 39 routes are spread across three sectors and range from 4b to 7a. There is a developed car park at the foot of the crag; the uphill approach takes ten minutes. The number of routes and climbing conditions may change, so check the current situation locally.
Arbre et Aventure 34 offers seven adventure courses and more than 200 metres of zip lines in total. The site is located in Bédarieux, in Grand Orb and in the heart of the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut Languedoc. The adventure activities complement the hiking and climbing options. As opening arrangements may change, check them before your visit.
Buildings and culture
The Église Saint-Louis dates from the early 19th century and is dedicated to Saint Louis. The church houses a rare Romantic-era organ by the organ builder Cavaillé-Coll, which is listed as a historic monument. Self-guided visits are possible; guided tours are available on request. The average visit is listed as lasting one hour. Visiting arrangements may change; confirm them in advance with the local tourist office.
The Chapelle Saint-Raphaël de la Bastide also brings together different periods. The sanctuary may date from the pre-Romanesque period, while the chapel’s first documented mention dates to 1182. Nearby is a Roman site, which is thought to have been connected to a miraculous spring venerated by pilgrims. This connection remains a possibility, not a confirmed fact.
The Musée du Train et de la Photographie features two model railway layouts depicting Bédarieux and Faugères. It complements the religious buildings with a view of two towns in miniature. As opening hours may change, check current visiting times before your visit.
Markets and regional produce
There are two different opportunities to visit a market: the traditional Bédarieux market takes place year-round on Monday mornings in the town centre. The BioNat market brings together local producers of organic and natural products on Saturday mornings. Market arrangements may change; check the current times before planning your visit. Depending on the day of the week, you can add a market visit to your stay, while the trails, climbing options and buildings offer other highlights.
