Church architecture, castle ruins and menhirs shape the cultural and historical character of Moulès-Et-Baucels; the Voie Verte and the Ranc de Banes circular hike offer a choice between two very different types of route. To plan a stay, you can first decide what matters most to you: are you mainly interested in architectural history, megaliths, the garrigue landscape, or a route on foot or by bike?

Churches, ruins and menhirs

At the entrance to Baucels stands Eglisette, a 12th-century church dedicated to John the Baptist. Its age and dedication provide its historical context; remnants of a fortified bell tower remain on the north side, while a Romanesque baptismal font can be found inside. The building can therefore be understood not only through its age, but also through its exterior and interior features.

The ruins of Castellas de Tournemire lie on the Blancardy estate in Moulès-Et-Baucels, at the foot of Bois de Laroque. Inside the Castellas tower, traces of a barrel vault, niches and loopholes can be seen.

Menhirs stand behind Ginestous, in the area of La Cisterne; Ginestous is one of the old castles. The finest menhir in the group is called “Taillé en amande” (Almond-shaped).

The cultural and historical themes are easy to distinguish: Eglisette highlights church dedication and furnishings, the Castellas its setting among ruins and the tower’s interior architecture, and Ginestous its menhirs. You can choose between a religious building, a castle ruin and megalithic remains.

Two routes with different profiles

The Voie Verte follows the route of the former Nîmes–Le Vigan–Tournemire railway line. It is 33 kilometres long, has very little elevation change, and is reserved for pedestrians, cyclists and people with reduced mobility. The former railway line also connects today’s route with the history of the railway.

The Ranc de Banes hiking route passes through Moulès-Et-Baucels. This circular hike covers 14.8 kilometres. Compared with the 33-kilometre Voie Verte, it is shorter, but is rated very difficult; by contrast, the Voie Verte is described as having very little elevation change. The shorter distance therefore does not indicate a lower level of difficulty. Since routes, trail markers and local conditions can change, it is advisable to check the information before setting out.

A landscape shaped by the garrigue

Moulès-Et-Baucels is characterised by scrub vegetation typical of the garrigue and by limestone soil. This offers a distinctive landscape to consider alongside churches, ruins and trails when choosing a destination. If you want to take vegetation and terrain into account, as well as culture and routes, you can include these features in your planning.
