In Lespignan, nature, historic buildings and hiking routes offer different ways to plan a trip. Would you like to focus on birdwatching, architecture or a particular route length? The Étang de la Matte, historic buildings and hiking routes of varying lengths offer specific starting points.
Hiking trails and distances
In January 2024, the municipality described three easy circular trails created by IDANH, starting at Parc des Buissonnets. The description at the time named residents, tourists, interested visitors and school groups as the target audiences. The concept combined the exploration of archaeological sites with 3D reconstructions and animations, as well as the discovery of ecosystems and biodiversity. Archaeology and nature were both central to the format described.
For the 2025 Tour de Lespignan, five routes were described, covering 3, 4.5, 6, 12 and 20 kilometres. The selection therefore ranges from a shorter to a considerably longer distance. The tour’s landscape description includes the lanes of Lespignan and paths over the surrounding hills, with views of the Étang de Vendres and as far as the sea horizon. If you plan to take part in a later edition, check the dates and route details; the exact routing may change.
Another dated hiking event is Baladons Patrimoine: the eight-kilometre nature and heritage walk described for 8 June 2024 linked a restored mill with the Roman archaeological site of Vivios in Lespignan. The programme also included a tasting of local wines. This excursion therefore stands out not only for its length, but also for its combination of mill heritage, an archaeological site and wine. Check the programme for any later dates.
Étang de la Matte and birdlife
The Étang de la Matte in Lespignan is the last surviving trace of a former lagoon into which the old course of the Aude flowed. The site offers good vantage points for observing birds and the landscape. Between the old course of the Aude and the Étang, migratory birds make use of the sunny landscape and expansive open spaces. This natural area brings both traces of the former lagoon and birdlife into focus.
Churches and protected buildings
The Chapelle du Cimetière has a single-nave hall with three bays, a stone-vaulted choir and a five-sided apse. It is listed in France’s supplementary inventory of historic monuments. The choir and apse of the Église Saint-Pierre, in the cemetery east of the village, are also protected as historic monuments: the choir was protected on 27 May 1952, and the apse on 6 January 1988. These architectural features and separate protection dates illustrate two specific aspects of this heritage.
The parish church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens is a Gothic building with stone vaulting, probably dating from the 13th or 14th century. Gallo-Roman history is represented by the remains of part of a villa, which was protected as a historic monument by decree on 25 January 1971. These buildings and remains represent different historical periods; their respective features can be explored independently.
Mills and local traditions
The Moulin Mauriçou mill was partially restored by the association Les Amis de Lespignan. The Moulin Fabregat can be visited by prior reservation, subject to certain conditions. If you are considering a visit, check the conditions and make a reservation in advance. The two mills offer different points of interest: one is known for its partial restoration by a local association, while the other can be visited by prior reservation.
The Fête de la Transhumance is another local tradition. Its 16th edition celebrated agropastoralism. The programme for that edition included a flock procession from Vendres to Lespignan and the nature walk “A la rencontre du troupeau”. These events refer to the 16th edition; check the dates and programme of any later event.
