Baillargues combines a rail connection to Montpellier with several distinct cultural themes: churches from different centuries, fortification features and Camargue traditions. Vineyards and garrigue add to the character of the place. This raises a practical question when choosing a base for your stay: how important is the journey to Montpellier city centre compared with the local themes you would like to include in your visit?

Getting here and staying

Baillargues’ multimodal transport hub has been in operation since the end of 2013. From there, travellers can reach Montpellier city centre in eight minutes on 81 trains a day. Check the train frequency again before travelling so you can plan your journey using the current timetable. For choosing where to stay, the journey time offers a concrete point of comparison: you can weigh it against the time you would like to spend exploring the local historical and cultural themes.

Saint-Julien and the fortified past

The Church of Saint-Julien dates back to the 11th century and was fortified in the 15th century. Its visible features include two flanking towers, remains of machicolations and arrow slits. The masonry also stands out: it is laid in a rare herringbone pattern. The church thus brings together different architectural clues to its history, from the building’s great age to the later fortifications.

The preserved “Tour de Guet” is another testament to this fortified past. Together with the features of Saint-Julien, it provides two distinct points of interest for exploring Baillargues’ history: the architecture of a church in one case, and a surviving trace of the period of fortification in the other. Visitors with a particular interest in architectural history can take these differences into account when choosing where to stay.

Pilgrim history and music

The Romanesque Church of Saint-Antoine de Cadoule was built in the 12th century as a stop for pilgrims on a route of the Way of St James. Its historical associations therefore differ from those of the fortified Saint-Julien: at Saint-Antoine, the focus is on its Romanesque construction and pilgrim history, while at Saint-Julien it is on the later fortifications.

Music is another cultural aspect associated with Saint-Julien. The church’s organ is intended for concerts of 18th-century German music. This adds a musical theme to the architectural history, without implying that a specific concert date is scheduled.

Camargue traditions

The École de Raseteurs Baillargues Métropole trains young people aged 12 to 20 in the art of raset and the traditions of the Camargue. The Fête du Taureau is another link to these traditions: it has been held on the first Friday of June every year since 2009. The festival is free and open to everyone, and includes a commented Camargue bull race. As the exact programme may change from year to year, check the event dates before travelling.

The school and the festival represent different ways in which Camargue traditions are celebrated in Baillargues: the school focuses on training young people, while the festival is an event for everyone. If this theme is important to your trip, the occasion and your preferred travel dates can help you decide what to focus on.

Arenas, landscape and activities

Baillargues’ municipal arenas are rectangular, whereas most arenas are round. This shape clearly sets them apart from the more common circular form and provides another distinctive feature in the townscape alongside the historic churches.

Baillargues is surrounded by vineyards and garrigue. For travellers interested in the landscape as well as architecture, this setting offers another way to experience the area’s cultural themes. Palm Park is near the train station. Visitors can ride scooters, rollerblades, skateboards and BMX bikes there. These activities and the park’s location can be considered as a separate planning factor alongside the churches and Camargue traditions.
