Bouzigues offers insight into shellfish farming on the Étang de Thau through traces of the past and a variety of visitor experiences. The Musée de l’Étang de Thau, the history of oyster farming and activities on the water give you different starting points for planning. Depending on whether you are interested in local history, learning about farming or nature experiences, you can choose what to focus on during your stay.

Shellfish Farming and Local History

The Musée de l’Étang de Thau is dedicated to the work of shellfish farmers and fishermen. It opened on 21 October 1991 and is recognised as a “Musée de France”. Another way to explore the area’s history is through the “Pyramide” oyster-farming technique, developed in 1925: Antoine Louis Tudesq and other residents of Bouzigues developed it, making Bouzigues one of the birthplaces of shellfish production on the Étang de Thau.

Oyster and mussel farming in the Étang de Thau began as early as around 1907–1908 and gained importance after the Second World War. This timeline distinguishes the start of farming in the lagoon from the technique later developed in Bouzigues. Those interested in how landscape, work and local history come together will find more than just one historical point of reference here.

The Église Saint-Jacques le Majeur also reflects different phases of construction. It was built in the 14th and 15th centuries and remodelled in the 17th century; Gothic and Baroque elements remain. The high altar ensemble is listed as a Monument historique. The church and museum offer different points of focus: the former centres on architectural history, while the latter explores the work of shellfish farmers and fishermen.

Harbour, Cycle Path and Water Activities

The Port de Bouzigues is the Canal du Midi’s first port of call on the Étang de Thau. Guided boat trips between the oyster farms depart from the harbour. Timetables may vary by operator; if you plan to take a trip, confirm the date with the operator in advance.

The cycle path around the Étang de Thau passes through Bouzigues and connects the village with Balaruc-le-Vieux and Mèze. Local construction work or temporary conditions may affect the route. Before setting out on a bike ride, check the route for your visit rather than assuming it will remain unchanged.

The Yacht Club de Bouzigues offers wingfoiling, windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, catamaran sailing and canoeing. Availability may vary by season and operator. If a particular activity is important to your trip, check in advance what is available on your travel dates.

Tastings, Beaches and Nature Experiences

Local oyster farms open their *mas* (farmhouses) for tastings and demonstrate shellfish-farming methods. These include attaching young shellfish, raising them on submerged tables and removing them from the ropes. Visits and tastings may vary by producer, so check directly with the farm concerned before setting aside time for them.

The two beaches also offer different practical features to consider. Plage de la Trémie has an access mat for people with reduced mobility; check its condition before your visit. At Plage de la Pyramide, children can observe the lagoon’s wildlife in sheltered waters. Swimming conditions may vary.

The nature activity “Edmond le poisson”, offered by the CPIE, takes visitors into the lagoon and along the coast with a net and bucket: the aim is to find a missing fish, and the underwater seagrass beds are also part of the activity. The meeting point is in front of the Musée de l’Étang de Thau on Quai du Port in 34140 Bouzigues. As dates are seasonal and meeting arrangements may change with the programme, confirm both in advance. The Ferme Zoo de Bouzigues offers a different kind of nature experience: the route passes through a wooded park where children can feed and interact with animals directly. Access and the programme may vary.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

For tours, nature activities and visits to producers, it is worth checking dates, as these experiences are not available consistently throughout the year. This lets you plan around the activities that are actually available on your travel dates.
