Beaulieu originated in the 12th century from two independent villages. A stay here offers a variety of themes: sacred buildings, the Château de Beaulieu and the history of the Pierre de Beaulieu, as well as trails on the grounds of the Anciennes carrières de Beaulieu et de Sussargues. There is also a circular cycling route that passes through Beaulieu. You can focus on local history, or consider the walking trails and cycling route as separate ways to enjoy outdoor activity.

Chapel, château and local history

The Chapelle Notre-Dame de la Pitié is mentioned in a document from 1153. It was classified as a historic monument on 8 June 1979. It is thought to have been a place of pilgrimage as early as before 1211, where people prayed for the healing of illnesses and ailments. The dates represent different historical layers: 1153 marks the mention, the period before 1211 the presumed pilgrimage status, and 1979 the classification. This distinction helps keep religious history and heritage protection from being conflated into a single date.

The Château de Beaulieu dates from the 11th and 12th centuries and is privately occupied. Its former fortification towers are still visible. The Église Saint-Pierre-aux-liens offers a different architectural landmark: its forecourt features a terraced garden with Mediterranean plant species. The range therefore extends from a presumed pilgrimage tradition and former fortifications to a planted outdoor space.

Pierre de Beaulieu: from rock to building material

The Pierre de Beaulieu is shell limestone, formed from the calcareous remains of marine animals. Its extraction is documented from Roman times and continued to develop through the Middle Ages. In the region, the stone was used for castles, churches and bridges. Anyone interested in architectural history will find a clear connection here between geological formation, historical extraction and the material’s use. These perspectives complement one another without limiting the stone’s history to a single building.

Walking trails, a circular cycling route and a summer programme

The grounds of the Anciennes carrières de Beaulieu et de Sussargues have walking trails accessible on foot and by mountain bike. The circular trail has information boards. This gives your walk its own framework: you can follow the trails while also taking in the explanations along the route.

The “Boucle Cyclo n°1 – Castries et la Plaine de Lunel” cycling loop is a separate route. After passing through Boisseron and Saussines, it continues through Beaulieu. For planning purposes, these are two distinct points of reference: a circular trail on the grounds of the old quarries and a named cycling loop with a stated sequence of places. This makes it possible to choose the option that suits you, without treating the two as the same route.

The grounds of the Anciennes carrières are also home to an open-air theatre, with a summer programme. If you are planning to visit for a performance, check the programme dates in advance; events are seasonal.
