Vailhan offers a range of options for a stay combining nature and cultural experiences. At the Domaine des Olivettes, activities on the lake take centre stage, alongside a marked trail to a basalt summit, the Sentier des Olivettes and themed cultural activities. This makes it easy to plan around your priorities: time by the water, a geological highlight or a walk exploring historical themes.

At the Domaine des Olivettes

The lake at the Domaine des Olivettes is set up for walking, mountain biking and fishing. The relevant regulations apply to these activities. Several picnic tables are available at the Domaine, making it possible to take a break. Swimming is also possible at the Barrage et lac des Olivettes, but there is no supervision. If you plan to swim, take this into account when making your decision. Walking, fishing and picnicking are different ways to spend time at the Domaine; for swimming, the lack of supervision is an additional planning consideration.

Basalt and trails

From the car park at the Domaine des Olivettes, a marked trail leads to a relatively low summit of basalt rock. The summit was formed by ancient lava flows that extend from the Lodévois to Cap d’Agde. Here, a clearly identified hiking destination is linked to a geological story that reaches far beyond the summit itself.

The Sentier des Olivettes starts and ends in Vailhan and offers views of the shimmering Lac des Olivettes. Both the starting and finishing point and a specific landscape view are clearly identified to help you find your way.

Riverside landscape in its regional context

The continental type 1 ZNIEFF “Vallons de la rive gauche du lac des Olivettes” is located in the communes of Vailhan, Cabrières and Montesquieu. It includes the Peyne River for about one kilometre upstream and downstream of Lac des Olivettes.

Cultural activities on foot

The heritage walk to the Tibéret watermills starts in Vailhan and is just under 9 kilometres long. It takes you to discover a former Templar relay station. The route length gives you a concrete basis for planning your day, without specifying a walking time.

Another activity takes you to the Église de Vailhan. It is offered year-round and free of charge, and starts at Place du Boulodrome. For this activity and the walk to the watermills, it is advisable to check the current arrangements before planning. This helps you assess the two different cultural activities, including their respective starting points and conditions.

Historical sights

The Romanesque Église Sainte-Marie has been mentioned since the 12th century. The ruins of the Château on the Castellas rock have also been mentioned since the 12th century; they crown its rocky summit. The capitelles are also among Vailhan’s sights. Together, these named places take you from Romanesque architecture to the ruins on the rock and another part of the local heritage.
