The Gorges de Colombières bring together mountains and forests, with cascades shaped by the Ruisseau d’Arles. They are located in Colombières-sur-Orb in the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut-Languedoc. This combination gives the area a clear appeal for travellers who want to explore the landscape on foot while also discovering traces of its cultural heritage.

Hiking among heathland, forest and views

The “Randonnée des Gorges de Colombières” is a challenging 13-kilometre circular hike. It takes 5 hours and 30 minutes to complete. This gives you a clear time frame for the route, which you should plan as a longer activity. As trail conditions can vary, check them before setting off. The trail passes through heathland with gorse and heather, then descends along a former Roman road through stands of old oak and chestnut trees.

The “Les Balcons d’Arles” hike offers a different perspective, with views of the Caroux and the Tour carrée, which overlooks the Ruisseau d’Albine. The “Randonnée Jean-Claude Carrière” passes through terraces marked by oak and chestnut trees and bordered by dry-stone walls. Four themed stops provide information about the man, his life and work, the history of the area, Here and Elsewhere, and cinema. You can therefore choose between the routes according to your interests: views of the Caroux and the tower, or a trail with additional cultural stops.

Cultural heritage

After passing the ruins of an old chestnut-drying shed, the “PR des Gorges de Colombières” leads to the troglodyte dwellings. At the lieu-dit Le Battut, the Tour carrée de Colombières-sur-Orb is entirely listed as a historic monument; the listing dates from 28 June 1939. Together with the themes covered at the stops along the Randonnée Jean-Claude Carrière, this offers a variety of points of interest, from historic buildings and ruins to people, local history and cinema.

Pools and café-bookshop

You can reach the natural pools of the Gorges de Colombières from the signposted car park on the RD908 in the village centre with just a few metres of walking there and back. Seasonal conditions may affect practical access, so take them into account when planning your visit.

L’Arbre à Palabres is a café-bookshop in the Gorges de Colombières-sur-Orb, at the foot of the Caroux. Its programme includes author events, creative workshops, readings and intimate concerts. For the Jaja Clubs, the bookshop becomes a convivial cave à manger for the evening. Check the dates of individual events before your trip.

The difference between the route details is useful for planning your day: the circular hike takes 5 hours and 30 minutes to walk, while the walk to the pools from the car park is only a few metres there and back. This lets you plan the longer hike and the shorter walk as separate blocks of time.
