Portiragnes offers a variety of reasons to visit: village history, protected landscapes and activities on the water. Portiragnes-Village and Portiragnes-Plage are connected by the Canal du Midi; Grande Maïre stretches between the canal and the sea.

Natural surroundings and the Canal du Midi

Grande Maïre covers 400 hectares. The natural area is designated as a Zone Naturelle d’Intérêt Faunistique et Floristique (natural area of ecological, faunistic and floristic interest) and is protected as part of the Natura 2000 network. Its size and protected status make this landscape a specific point of interest for anyone who would like to explore Portiragnes from a nature perspective as well.

The Canal du Midi has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1996 and connects Portiragnes-Village with Portiragnes-Plage. A paved, four-kilometre cycle path connects Portiragnes-Village with Portiragnes-Plage. The canal link and the cycle path are distinct connections: the canal is central to the area’s cultural heritage, while the cycle path refers to a specific route with a defined surface and length.

Village history and cultural heritage

The village developed around a 12th-century church. The old lanes are home to distinctive doors that are particularly worth seeing. The history of human settlement in Portiragnes spans 600,000 years. The Musée archéologique Jean Saluste is associated with the history of settlement in Portiragnes.

Activities on the water and on land

Azimut Aventures in the Domaine de Roque Haute in Portiragnes is a family adventure park with 18 treetop courses. Seasonal opening dates may vary. Water sports at Plage du Bosquet include stand-up paddleboarding, Flyfish rides, towable buoy and banana boat rides, wakeboarding, water skiing and parasailing; seasonal operating details may also vary. There are therefore different types of activities to choose from: treetop courses at the adventure park and water sports at Plage du Bosquet.

Boat rentals are available on the Canal du Midi, as are trips on an excursion boat or rowing boat. Operators and availability may change, so it is advisable to check the specific options in advance. A 2025 tourism guide lists year-round horseback rides along the Canal du Midi at Ranch Les Gaillardels in Portiragnes-Plage. Check the current opening arrangements before your visit; the rides are supervised by a state-qualified equestrian tourism guide, whose involvement, along with your booking, should also be confirmed.

Another option is a guided tour of a Camargue cattle farm run by the Manade du Grand Salan. This includes a trailer ride, a cattle-sorting demonstration and a tasting of beef specialities. Reservations and schedules may change; check these details when planning your visit.

Accessible public beaches

Portiragnes has two accessible public beaches with different facilities. Plage Ouest has wooden walkways, mats, a shower and toilets. Plage Est offers a Tiralo beach wheelchair and an accessible lifeguard station. If these facilities are important for your beach visit, check what is available in advance, as it may change.
