Vineyards, poetry and historic buildings reveal the different sides of Saint-Saturnin-De-Lucian. For planning your day, there are two circular routes with very different time requirements: a very easy loop of about one hour and a moderate hike of approximately four hours. Other highlights include the views from the Rocher des Vierges, the parish church and activities involving animals and wine. You can choose the focus of your stay according to your interests and the time available.
Two circular routes with different time requirements
OENORANDO® LE SENTIER DU VIN DES POETES is a very easy, two-kilometre circular route that takes about one hour to walk. The path winds between vineyards and poetry and introduces the people who make the wines of Saint-Saturnin-de-Lucian. The connection between landscape and winegrowing is part of the route’s theme.
OENORANDO® DES VIGNES AU ROCHER DES VIERGES takes more time: this moderate circular route is twelve kilometres long and takes about four hours to walk. It starts at the cooperative winery, passes through vineyards and garrigue, and climbs to the Roc des Deux Vierges, the highest point of the massif. The two routes therefore differ not only in length but also in character: one focuses on wine and poetry, while the other crosses several types of landscape on its way to the highest point. Route lengths, walking times and trail conditions may change; check the latest information before setting out.
Views and landscape at the Rocher des Vierges
The Rocher des Vierges lies northwest of the municipality. From there, panoramic views extend across the Hérault plain to the sea; you can also look down on the red Ruffes of Saint-Guiraud and Saint-Saturnin-de-Lucian. Several footpaths allow you to explore the area. The views provide a landscape contrast to the vineyards and garrigue of the circular route described above, though the two places are not the same.
The natural habitats in Saint-Saturnin-de-Lucian are also diverse. They include fallow land, garrigue and matorral, as well as deciduous and coniferous forests, wet meadows and Ruffes. These different landscapes add to the picture of a place whose surroundings are not limited to winegrowing.
Church and medieval fortification remains
The construction history of the parish church of Saint-Saturnin-de-Lucian can be read in its different parts: the choir and nave date from the 14th century, the north chapel from the 15th century and the staircase tower from the 16th century. The different dates give the building a clear chronological structure, rather than reducing the church to a single period.
Medieval fortification remains have been preserved on the grounds of the Château des Deux-Vierges. They include a round tower, a castle chapel, a square tower and a strong wall along the eastern edge of the plateau. Together with the parish church, these historic structures form a distinct cultural theme alongside the hiking and wine activities.
Animal visits and wine experiences
Les Z’Anim’O is an educational farm. During guided visits, you can see and pet some of the animals, feed them and, in some cases, ride them. Visits are only available by advance reservation. If you plan to include this activity, making a reservation in advance is therefore part of your planning.
There are various activities for wine enthusiasts: Domaine Virgile Joly welcomes visitors year-round and offers themed cellar tours and wine tastings. Fonjoya sells wine at its wine cellar and offers free wine tastings in Saint-Saturnin-de-Lucian. As visitor offerings may change, it is worth checking with the venue before your visit.
Plan your stay around your interests
Your planned activities can help guide your choice of hotel: would you prefer a short route focused on wine and poetry, a longer hike, or time for heritage and wine experiences? A visit to Les Z’Anim’O also requires advance planning, as reservations are mandatory. Tailor your accommodation search to the experiences that matter most to you, and check time-sensitive activities in advance.
