Saint-Thibéry can be discovered through its many facets: religious architecture, bridges with different historical connections, an archaeological site and volcanic formations. There are also guided tours and leisure activities. This lets you tailor your stay to what interests you most, from cultural history to landscapes.
The abbey church and its history
The abbey church of Saint-Thibéry was rebuilt in the Gothic style in the 15th century. Inside, you’ll find polychrome marble, as well as woodwork and choir stalls dating from the 18th century. The Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Thibéry is protected as a historic monument.
Another landmark in the town’s history is the Tower of Saint-Thibéry, built by Jean IV du Puy in 1509. These dates highlight different periods in the town’s history: from the rebuilding of the abbey church to its 18th-century furnishings and the construction of the tower. Guided tours of the historic heritage are offered throughout the year; a guide introduces visitors to the area’s history and cultural heritage.
Bridges with different stories
The Pont Vieux was built in 1575. In 1742, it was repaired after being damaged by flooding on the Thongue. The construction date and the repair tell of two different stages in its history: the building of the bridge and its later restoration after a flood.
The so-called Pont dite « romaine » represents a different period: it is a medieval bridge on the Via Domitia, built on a pilgrimage route. Despite its nickname, it dates from the Middle Ages. The two bridges offer distinct historical points of reference rather than representing a single period of construction.
Archaeology and digital discovery
Saint-Thibéry — le Fort is designated as an open-air archaeological site; the area around the site is accessible. Evidence on the Fort grounds points to continuous settlement from the 5th century BC through the Middle Ages. This long period makes the site a focus in its own right, alongside the architectural history of the abbey church and bridges.
A digital application developed in 2022 helps visitors discover the Pont de Saint-Thibéry. Check whether the application is currently available before using it. This makes the digital offering a distinct way to explore, separate from the guided tours of the historic heritage.
Basalt landscape and panoramic views
Les Orgues Basaltiques formed around 650,000 years ago, when a lava flow cooled during an eruption of the Monts Ramus volcanoes. The approximate age points to the geological origins of these rock formations. A walk near Les Orgues Basaltiques offers a 360° panorama of the Espinouse Mountains, the foothills of the Larzac, Mont Ramus and the surrounding villages.
This provides a focus on the landscape alongside the historic buildings. On the walk, take in the mountains, foothills and villages mentioned above; the volcanic origins offer a different perspective from the dates associated with the abbey church and bridges.
Leisure activities and the right time to visit
Pédalo-Rail® is a leisure activity for families or friends on the former railway line from Saint-Thibéry to Pézenas. It lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes, and the total distance is 6 kilometres: 3 kilometres each way. As operating details may change seasonally, check current availability in advance.
The jazz festival also offers a seasonal experience: it takes place every summer, around mid-August, although dates may vary from year to year. The activities therefore differ in terms of timing: guided tours of the historic heritage are offered year-round, while the festival takes place at a set time in summer. Check the exact dates if you plan to attend the festival.
