Fontanès lies among vineyards and garrigue and has a well-preserved natural environment. According to the INPN record updated on 16 January 2025, Fontanès is part of the Hautes Garrigues du Montpelliérais Natura 2000 site, designated as a Special Protection Area (SPA). Its historic position along the routes to Anduze, Montpellier and Sommières adds a history of older connections to this natural setting: since the Middle Ages, Fontanès has stood at their crossroads. The landscape, protected-area status and historic routes offer different perspectives on the village.

Buildings and former water supply

The Église Saint-Étienne is a 19th-century building that replaced an earlier church destroyed in the 18th century. The time gap clearly distinguishes the present church from its predecessor. On the Château La Roque wine estate, the remains of the Tour de la Roque are visible; the tower was converted into a winemaker’s house. This adaptive reuse links a built heritage site with the history of wine-growing. The fountains also recall the village’s former water supply: until after the Second World War, they were the village’s only sources of drinking water. The church, tower and fountains shed light on different aspects of Fontanès—building history, adaptive reuse and water supply—rather than just one period. The connection with wine is reflected both in the landscape and in the repurposed architecture.

Pic Saint-Loup and Château La Roque

Fontanès lies in the heart of the Pic Saint-Loup appellation, known for its high-quality wines. Château La Roque offers wine tastings and guided tours. Check the tasting arrangements and the booking and access conditions for tours before your visit, as these may change. The appellation gives Fontanès its wine-growing context, while tastings and guided tours are two specific visitor experiences offered by the estate. In this way, a regional connection and an on-site visit offer two distinct ways to explore wine.

Cycling and walking trails

The Tour du Puech des Mourgues cycling loop passes through Fontanès on its return leg and recommends a stop to see the church and the Languedoc architecture typical of the expansion of wine-growing in the 18th century and, above all, the 19th century. The recommended stop thus pairs a specific church building with a broader perspective on wine-growing architecture. The GR® de Pays Tours en Grand Pic Saint-Loup follows a 900 m stretch of the D 109 towards Fontanès and continues to the hamlet of Lascours. The routes differ: the cycling loop passes through the village on its return leg, while the GR® section heads towards Fontanès and continues to Lascours. Check trail conditions before setting out.
