Usclas-D'hérault lies on the right bank of the Hérault. The village's history includes a historic fortification, the Church of Saint-Brice and a transformation of agriculture before the French Revolution. There is also an easy VTT route between Paulhan and Usclas-D'hérault, as well as a 4 km walk, to help you plan your time. This lets you consider architectural history, agricultural history and outdoor activities as distinct points of interest.

Riverside Setting and Fortification

An embankment surrounds the village and protects it from the Hérault's ravages. The right bank indicates its location, while the embankment adds a protective function. It should be distinguished from the historic fortification, which had its own layout and access arrangement.

The historic fortification formed a square with sides measuring 41 metres. It could be entered through a single gate, defended by a tower on the northwest side. The side length gives the shape a specific scale; the gate and tower describe how access was defended. The layout and access can therefore be understood as two distinct aspects of the fortification.

Heritage and the Church of Saint-Brice

In Usclas-D'hérault, the Seuil de Roquemengarde weir is part of the protected Moulin de Roquemengarde complex; the fish passage is excluded.

The bell tower of the Church of Saint-Brice once served as the village's original gate. The present-day church is attached to the fortification walls without being integrated into them. Attachment and integration describe different structural relationships: the church adjoins the walls but does not thereby become part of the fortification.

Winegrowing and Onion Cultivation

On the eve of the French Revolution, winegrowing in Usclas-D'hérault had displaced the cultivation of grain and olives. At the same time, onions were also grown on a large scale in the commune. Both details refer to the same historical period, but highlight different aspects of agriculture: the shift in favour of winegrowing and the extensive cultivation of another crop. The village's history therefore cannot be reduced to winegrowing alone.

VTT Route and Walk

Route No. 18, “Paulhan and the Banks of the Hérault,” is a very easy, family-friendly 14 km VTT loop between Paulhan and Usclas-D'hérault. It takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Route conditions may change, so check them before setting out. This gives you an approximate time for the loop, which you can consider alongside the route conditions.

A walk in Usclas-D'hérault is listed as 4 km and two hours. The duration may change when routes are updated, so check the information in advance. By comparison, the VTT loop is 10 km longer but, according to the stated durations, is estimated to take about 30 minutes less. For planning, both the distance and the duration of each route therefore matter.
