Saint-Geniès-De-Fontedit offers a variety of reasons to stay: the Gothic parish church and the medieval Porte du Puits, the views from Chapelle Saint-Fulcran, and a hiking route through vineyards and olive groves.
Gothic Parish Church and Medieval Porte du Puits
The parish church of Saint-Geniès-De-Fontedit dates from the 14th century and was built in the southern French Gothic style, with a single nave. It has canonical sundials and a green bell tower. Canonical sundials indicate the traditional hours of prayer in the church. Unlike an ordinary sundial, which generally shows the time of day, they divide the day into periods of church prayer. The position of the sun serves as a guide for dividing the day according to set prayer times.
The Porte du Puits offers a different historical perspective. It dates from the 13th century to the beginning of the 14th century and is the only surviving remnant of the three fortified outer gates of the former enclosure around the community. The outside of the Porte has two arches; inside is a round-arched passageway. The church and gate represent different themes: religious architecture and the community’s former fortifications. The bell dates from the first quarter of the 15th century, is dated 1401, and is listed as a Monument historique.
Chapelle Saint-Fulcran: Views and Different Uses
Chapelle Saint-Fulcran is 1,500 metres from the village. From the chapel, you can see the blue mountains of the Cévennes and the extensive coastal plain stretching from Agde to Canigou. Picnics are held at the chapel; the site is also used for club activities, relaxation, reading, and meditation. The views and uses give the site a different focus from the buildings in the village.
Hiking Through Vineyards and Olive Groves
The RANDONNÉE SAINT-GENIÈS-DE-FONTEDIT “VIGNES ET PATRIMOINE” route is a 14.0 km hike of moderate difficulty. It passes through vineyards and olive groves. Conditions in the agricultural landscape may change depending on the season.
For the start, one navigation detail is important: the route description notes that the start marker is missing at the starting point. When facing the “Le clocher vert” cooperative winery, turn right. Check the route description again before setting out, especially with regard to this missing marker.
For planning your day, the chapel and hiking route offer different scales: Chapelle Saint-Fulcran is 1,500 metres from the village; the hike is 14.0 kilometres long and is rated moderate. This lets you choose between a single destination with landscape views and a longer walking route when planning your stay.
