Le Caylar is located on the Larzac plateau, a landscape shaped by agropastoralism. Roc Castel is a rocky spur that rises 70 metres above Le Caylar; its summit is home to the remains of a medieval castle and a viewpoint overlooking the Causse. Landscape and history come together here at a clearly identifiable destination. Le Caylar is also one of the prominent gateways to the southern Larzac, providing access to the areas of the Cirque de Navacelles Grand Site de France and the wider Lodévois et Larzac area.
Church History Across Two Periods
The present-day parish church of Saint-Martin was rebuilt between 1855 and 1864 on the site of the former Notre-Dame-de-l’Hôpital church. The church houses a carved tympanum dating from the 15th century. It comes from an unidentified building and was listed as a historic monument in 1905. Two periods must be distinguished when dating these features: the tympanum dates from the 15th century, while the present-day church was rebuilt in the 19th century.
A Circular Walk to Roc Castel
The easy Balade du Roc Castel is a 1 km walking loop from the village to the summit of Roc Castel and takes about 30 minutes. This makes it easy to plan the walk as a short, standalone highlight of the landscape. Walking conditions may vary depending on the season; check them before setting out. Roc Castel is freely accessible; check for any temporary closures before your visit.
The route leads to the Chapelle Notre-Dame du Roc Castel, partly carved into the rock in the 12th century and rebuilt in the 18th century. It ends at the Tour Portal Blanc, built in the 14th and 15th centuries. The walk thus links the rocky spur with two other structures dating from different centuries.
Summer Programme and Market
The Festival du Roc Castel explores the theme of slow travel. Every year since 2010, Le Caylar has hosted a six-day summer programme in which travellers share stories of journeys on foot, by bicycle, on horseback or by boat. The theme therefore covers different ways of travelling, while the programme itself varies from year to year. Check the dates if you would like to plan your visit around the festival.
The local producers’ market offers products for sale and tasting on site in a musical atmosphere. Check the dates for the 2026 seasonal programme before your trip.
Getting There via the A75
Le Caylar is easy to reach via exit 49 on the A75. The motorway rest area is about 200 m from the village and is connected to it by a five-minute walk. This provides practical information for your arrival; the area’s regional setting also extends beyond the village to the aforementioned parts of the southern Larzac.
