Saint-André-de-Sangonis lies in the Hérault Valley, among vineyards and garrigue. Its heritage, gardens, olive oil and a short circular route offer different ways to explore the area: you can discover its architecture and local stories, compare garden styles, or take part in tastings and guided activities.

Landscape, Garden and Garrigue

The Jardin Botanique de la Font de Bezombes was created in a small valley in the 1990s. An abundant spring made it possible to create ponds and supports lush vegetation. The site brings together seven garden styles: a tropical garden, a desert garden and a wetland garden, a Chinese garden and a formal garden, as well as a monastery-style herb garden and a kitchen garden. This lets visitors discover diversity not just through individual plants, but also through the different designs of the garden areas.

Belfry, Fountain and Local History

The Fontaine du Griffe is a monumental fountain dating from the late 19th century. Its design includes a basin, statues and cast-iron columns. The belfry dates from the 14th century and stands at the exceptional height of 22.70 metres. Its tower is topped by a rare so-called “wavy bell,” listed in the inventory of historic monuments.

The town hall also offers a tangible glimpse into the area's architectural history: built in 1848, the building is made of dressed limestone blocks and served as the town hall, market hall and school. Another facet of local tradition is the black pig, the totem animal of Saint-André-de-Sangonis, which is linked to a village legend. Architecture and storytelling thus offer different perspectives without requiring a long list of sights.

La Trace Verte: a short circular route

The very easy La Trace Verte circular route is 2.0 kilometres long and takes about 30 minutes. It links notable heritage features with a mural by a local resident, a picturesque lane and a viewpoint. Along the way, there are also details about silkworm farming and the development of winegrowing. This combination makes the walk a way to connect architectural and landscape impressions with aspects of local history.

The route is less than a ten-minute walk from the Saint-André-de-Sangonis – Lot. Lavergne bus stop. Check the route details before setting off; if you plan to travel to the stop, also check current bus services.

Olive Oil, Tastings and Guided Activities

Le Moulin de la Garrigue offers free tours and tastings at an educational olive grove. The olive oil is produced entirely on site from locally harvested olives. At the Oliveraie du Coffre, free tastings and guided tours are available on request. The olive grove cultivates 400 olive trees for oil production; the characteristics of the olive oil vary depending on the variety. Check visiting arrangements before your visit.

For a different kind of activity, Envol Tandem offers introductory paragliding flights accompanied by a qualified instructor. Check availability and takeoff sites before booking. The Office des Moniteurs du Languedoc brings together state-certified guides who specialise in providing support for canyoning, climbing, via ferrata and abseiling hikes. Check reservation and seasonal conditions before booking as well.

The activities vary in format: La Trace Verte is a timed walk; at the olive farms, tastings and tours are the main focus, sometimes by request; the other activities mentioned are accompanied by qualified instructors or guides.
