Frontignan can be discovered through three distinct themes: the sandy coast at the Lido, protected nature in the Massif de la Gardiole, and culture spanning historic architecture, underwater archaeology and Muscat traditions. These themes do not have to fit into a single itinerary when planning your trip. You can choose your focus based on whether you are looking for time by the water, landscapes and wildlife, or history and summer events.

Coast and water sports at the Lido de Frontignan

The Lido de Frontignan is a seven-kilometre stretch of sand between the lagoons and the Mediterranean. It extends from the Quartier de l’Entrée to the wild beaches of Aresquiers and runs past the marina. This stretch of coast is used for leisure, walking and water sports. You can make relaxation and walks your focus, or take an interest in water sports—different ways to enjoy the same stretch of coast.

Protected landscapes in the Massif de la Gardiole

The Massif de la Gardiole offers a different landscape. It is a classified and protected area covering 5,000 hectares, 600 hectares of which lie within the territory of Frontignan la Peyrade. The massif offers views of the coast, lagoons, the Bassin de Thau and the hinterland. Its Mediterranean flora and fauna include birds of prey and ocellated lizards, among other species. Unlike the Lido, the focus here is not the sandy shore and leisure and water sports, but the protected landscape, its views and examples of wildlife.

Architectural history and underwater archaeology

The Église Saint-Paul combines a fortified design with an early Romanesque history. The building, classified as a historic monument, dates in its first Romanesque form to the early 12th century. The Musée municipal offers a different perspective: it is housed in the former Chapelle des pénitents blancs, dating from 1642, and is classified as a Musée de France. Its collection includes underwater archaeological objects from the investigation of several shipwrecks discovered off Aresquiers. The cultural theme therefore ranges from architecture and building history to archaeological objects connected with the wrecks off Aresquiers.

Muscat Festival and Languedoc jousting

The Festival du Muscat has taken place every summer in July in Frontignan la Peyrade since 1987. The programme includes cellar tours, food-themed walks, tasting workshops, exhibitions and tasting stands. The varied programme offers different ways to take part: tours and tastings have a different focus from walks and exhibitions. Languedoc jousting competitions have been part of Frontignan’s local tradition at the Étang d’Ingril since 1627; this tradition is particularly visible at the town’s tournament on 14 July. The festival and jousting are two distinct occasions: Muscat and culinary activities on the one hand, and a traditional competition at the Étang d’Ingril on the other. If you want to plan around one of these summer events, check the date of the event in advance.
