A three-arched structure carries the waters of the La Quarante beneath the Canal du Midi. The Pont Canal makes water engineering a tangible part of a stay in Quarante; the Abbatiale Sainte-Marie adds an insight into early Languedoc Romanesque architecture. If you would like to explore the outdoors, the Les Berges du Canal circular walk offers a specific route through the landscape between vineyards and the Canal du Midi.

Abbey Church, Aqueduct and Capitelles

The Abbatiale Sainte-Marie was first consecrated in 982 and is considered an important example of early Languedoc Romanesque architecture. Its treasury includes a sarcophagus dating from the 3rd century—providing a much earlier historical reference within Quarante’s cultural heritage.

The Pont Canal is also known as the double aqueduct of the Rebaut, La Birouge or La Tine. Construction began in 1693; the three-arched structure carries the waters of the La Quarante beneath the Canal du Midi. It was most recently restored by the Bâtiments de France. Its names and design make this water-engineering structure a striking counterpoint to the Romanesque abbey church.

The Capitelles are also part of the local heritage: domed huts built from dry stone without mortar. In the past, they provided temporary shelter for small landowners and also served as shelters for tools and agricultural produce. Their construction and former function set them distinctly apart from the town’s large stone buildings.

Collections and guided tours

The Musée Archéologique de Quarante displays a collection spanning the Neolithic to the Middle Ages. It includes finds from the Chalcolithic and Iron Age, as well as from the Gallo-Roman, Visigothic and Early Medieval periods. The collection’s timeframe therefore extends from early cultures to the periods of the Middle Ages.

Individual and group tours of the abbey church are offered in French and English. A guided tour of the Musée Archéologique is available by arrangement; it includes the archaeological museum, the Musée d’art sacré and the abbey church. As tour arrangements may change, check the dates in advance—especially if you are planning to take the guided tour.

Circular walk and greenway

The Les Berges du Canal circular walk starts in Quarante, is 13 kilometres long and takes around four hours and 15 minutes. It is rated easy and runs through a picturesque landscape between vineyards and the Canal du Midi. The approximate duration and distance provide a concrete basis for planning; trail conditions may vary seasonally.

The walk’s starting point is less than a ten-minute walk from the QUARANTE – Collège bus stop. Bus routes and stops may change, so check current services in advance. Another outing takes the Croix de Juillet route past the ruins of the Château des Uyères, hidden among the oak trees.

The Camin'Art greenway passes through Quarante and connects Capestang and the Canal du Midi with the former railway station in Cruzy. This former station has been converted into a restaurant. The routes therefore differ in character: Les Berges du Canal is a circular walk with a specified distance, while Camin'Art connects several named places.
