Between the lagoon and limestone hills

Mudaison lies halfway between the wetlands surrounding the Étang de l’Or and the limestone hills rising a few kilometres to the north. Nearby is the Étang de l’Or lagoon: it covers about 3,200 hectares and has flora and fauna typical of the Petite Camargue. The lagoon area and the northern hills thus provide distinct landscape landmarks. Check conditions and access around the lagoon locally.

Traces from different centuries

Archaeological excavations in Mudaison have uncovered settlement traces from the Copper Age, between 2500 and 1800 BC. This should be distinguished from the dating of the village’s origins: archaeological research places them around the 9th century. The Copper Age finds indicate settlement traces, while the approximate 9th-century date refers to the founding of the village. The Copper Age traces therefore predate the village’s founding, dated to around the 9th century, by more than two millennia.

A square fortification next to the church enclosed the village centre. It dates from the 13th century and the period around it. The Ancienne maison des Ursulines (or presbytery) is a manor house built in the 17th century and incorporated into the medieval fortifications of the village centre. In 1782, the building was sold to the municipality to serve as a presbytery. It is protected as a historic monument. This manor house thus brings together a 17th-century construction date and the older fortifications.

The first Church of Saint Asciscle and Sainte Victoire was built between the 10th and 12th centuries. In 1770, it was completely rebuilt, with the exception of the lower section. When considering the dates, it is worth distinguishing the first church from the later reconstruction: 1770 refers to the renovation, not the original building. A paved section of road, known as a calade and typical of the 14th century, was also uncovered on Rue du Presbytère.

Plan your summer festival and transport

A 2026 municipal report describes Mudaison’s summer festival as traditional. It mentions Camargue traditions, pétanque competitions, themed aperitifs and musical entertainment, as well as abrivados, bandidos, courses camarguaises, encierros and taureaux-piscine. The exact festival dates and programme vary. If you’d like to include the festival in your trip, check both for the year of your visit.

For local journeys, the Transp’Or on-demand bus operates year-round. It picks up passengers near their homes and takes them to a meeting point; for the return journey, it goes to the stop nearest their home. If you plan to use the bus, check the service details before travelling.
