In Valergues, architectural history, local history and recurring festivals offer distinct highlights for a stay. The Église Sainte-Agathe and the historic Camí Sala salt route tell different stories of the town; from the Tour de l’Horloge, views extend over the village and countryside. Cycle routes towards several nearby towns add to the picture. If you are looking for accommodation in Valergues, you can time your trip according to whether you are mainly interested in church and local history, a festival or cycling.

The Église Sainte-Agathe and other historic traces

The Église Sainte-Agathe was probably built in a single construction phase at the end of the 11th century or the beginning of the 12th century. Its exterior decoration in the so-called Lombard style, with small columns, is noteworthy. Since 22 July 1963, the exterior of the apse and the south wall of the nave have been listed as historic monuments by decree. The church therefore offers a way to distinguish both its probable date of construction and a much later protection designation relating specifically to these parts of the building.

The Château de Valergues is an 18th-century residential estate. It includes a park laid out in the style of Versailles and a restored fountain known in the region as a “pouzaranque”. The Noria is in the park next to the Jardin des Cigales. Archaeological traces are also part of local history: numerous ancient remains have been identified at the Sainte Aubine site. A villa with a comparatively luxurious residential area may have stood there in the 1st century AD; this remains a possibility, not a certainty.

Views over the village and countryside

From the Tour de l’Horloge, views extend over the old village, newer buildings and the 519 hectares of the commune of Valergues. Agricultural land lies to the south; forests, heathland and garrigue lie to the north. The different directions give this viewpoint a clear landscape structure: the village and open spaces on one side, wooded areas and garrigue on the other.

Salt route and festival traditions

The historic Camí Sala salt route passed through Valergues along Rue Frédéric Mistral and connected the Salindres d’Exindres with Pont Saint Esprit. Thus, alongside the history of the church’s construction, an earlier connection between places is also part of Valergues’ history. Its named route links local history with the salt route, but this does not make it a present-day excursion route.

Votive festivals are held twice a year in Valergues, organised by the Comité des Fêtes Lou Seden in collaboration with the town hall. The Sainte Agathe festival takes place in winter, at the beginning of the first quarter. Programmes and exact dates vary; check the current date if you want to plan your trip around a festival. During the festivals, the village siren signals the start and end of events featuring bull-running traditions such as Abrivado, Bandido and Encierro. If you want to visit for a particular festival, you can take the event date into account when planning your stay.

Cycling routes and outdoor activities

Cycle routes from Valergues lead towards Lansargues, Lunel-Viel and Mauguio. These three destinations add an opportunity to plan a cycling trip around the area to the town’s cultural and historical attractions. Valergues is also home to the Parcours de santé J. Rieusset at 153, chemin de Bouisset.
